I always have trouble understanding issues like these. Won't everyone be thrilled by your good news? Your joy doesn't diminish hers.

If you tell one family, you should tell the other just to be fair. Super thoughtful about you not wanting to steal the spotlight! If you told one sister, could you possibly tell your little sister privately and get her opinion on what she is comfortable with?

I would tell them... Honestly, you're the best judge of your family. The only way I could think that anyone would think of you sharing your good news as "thunder stealing" would be if your little sister was the type to get her feelings hurt over the timing of sharing the news.
If it were MY family, everyone would just be like, "Wow, we are all blessed to have so many wonderful things to look forward to." And if I had two sisters, and one told the other she was pregnant but DIDN'T tell me, I would be pissed at my sister for not telling me.

@Foodnerd81: I'd say go with your gut feeling. You know your family better than any of us, so you probably know the best way to go about it! Trust your instincts :)

@sorrycharlie: I could, but I know she would say to go ahead and would be excited.
We had a similar situation where my older sister didn't want to tell extended family that she was pregnant until after my wedding shower, but I was so excited I just wanted everyone to know.

Also, this sounds... petty? But this will be the first grandchild on DH's side and I know his mom is going to be so, so excited. I have 2 nephews on my side, so of course they will still be excited, but not the way DH's mom will be.

@Bao: No, our families don't have much contact at all and are on opposite sides of the country, so no risk there!

If you're telling your DH's family, tell yours too. It's not fair to leave them out of the loop. I'd either tell both or tell neither.

I guess that's up to you, but if you tell some family...do you think it will leak somehow to your family? It may be best to tell them all around the same general time so it's fair.

How long do you think is appropriate to wait from one big announcement to the next? My baby sister just got engaged this weekend, and we knew it was coming because her fiance had made some plans with us. I'm 7 weeks pregnant and we have only told my older sister, no one else yet.

I won't be with my side for Christmas, but I deciding between telling them via FaceTime while everyone is together for Christmas Eve, or waiting until I go back sometime in Jan, which could stretch to Feb. I'm wondering if 2-3 weeks isn't really enough time between? She really isn't someone who would get bent out of shape over something like that, but at the same time, she is the baby in a big family, so she never gets the spotlight! What would you do?
We are telling DH's family over Christmas, since we will be with them.
