My dad is a doctor, and knew something was up with my mom's thyroid when she gained 30lbs really quickly, and couldn't lose it no matter what. She was also really fatigued. Got checked out, and yep overactive thyroid. Not sure about her cycles.

I had no idea. I didn't really have any of the symptoms of it. I did have some trouble losing weight, but I figured that was just my metabolism. I found out when my doctor did a blood panel looking for possible reasons I wasn't ovulating and my TSH was 12.44.

I will say though that between Synthroid and Metformin I find I have slightly more energy and my metabolism seems much faster.

@babycanuck: My concern is also the inability to lose weight. My weight will not budge, regardless of how healthy I eat or work it. It's really frustrating.

@LindsayInNY: as far as the dr is concerned I don't, but she was worried because of all the weight I put on and EVERY woman in my family has something.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about 15 lbs over a couple of years but ask your doc to test you anyway for it. My weight gain was 20-25 lbs year 1 and another 30 year 2

@babycanuck: I didn't know you had thyroid issues! There's no family history of it so I don't know if I'm making this up now or what. I'm still a healthy weight but have gained a good 15 lbs. over the last couple of years. Been at the same weight for a while now and can't drop any of it.

I actually lost wt w no change in lifestyle (was already 'underwt' for ht and lost an additional 10 over 9 mths) and they ordered bloodwork at my annual in my mid 20s. They also said trace anemia. I have longish cycles as well (36 days when we got bfp w ds)

I put on 20+ lbs when they tested me for mine. that wasn't the case but it was a high chance because of family history. My dr wasn't sure the blood test was right so she had me go for a thyroid u/s too in order to confirm

I am also always cold and have fatigue. All.the.time. It can cause brain fog, depression, my nails are thin. Shitty. (I am on meds but my doc wasn't checking me and I just found out I am hypo again.)

@LindsayInNY: it was one of the first things my RE tested for. My PCP had tested for it, too. I gained about 30lbs coming off the pill and couldn't get it off. Also always tired and cold, and my cycles were 90+ days long. My thyroid tests were normal but I was diagnosed with PCOS.

I gained something like 10-15 pounds too. I also felt thick/heavy, if that makes sense. As soon as I began taking medicine I lost some weight (not all of it, but some), and did not feel as thick/heavy. Yes, I have/had cycle issues. It was never the same length of time between cycles, or sometimes missed, etc.
