@regberadaisy: It's already set at 3, we sent invites out last week. He'll be able to nap there or if all else fails my mom can take him for a walk. My sister and kids will be out of the house, so I don't think there will be too many distractions. I ultimately concluded that 1 would be a disaster because he definitely won't nap if he knows there is a party going on - also, none of our toddler friends would be able to make it at 1.

Will T be able to nap at your sister's house? I vote 1pm so that he can be there to greet all the guests then go take a nap. That was my theory and M didn't want to nap with everyone there!

We're doing LO's first party at 3. It works best for us, and most of our baby guests will still be on two naps, which will make a morning/mid-day party hard.

B's party is starting at 3. I figure the cake smash will be messy, so I want to be able to bathe him and get him ready for bed right after his party.

we always made it to a party no matter the time even if it was right in the middle of naps. we just manipulated naps by doing stroller/car naps, etc.

that said for a first birthday party, mornings are usually when the kids are in the best mood around 10:00-10:30ish.

We're also planning on a 3 or 3:30pm start time as my LO usually naps until 3ish. I figured if people show up early we can mingle with them until he does actually wake up. It just made more sense to do a later afternoon start time than trying to squeeze in everything in the mid-day when he's only awake for 3 hours inbetween naps.

I've been thinking about the same thing for dude's birthday this summer. I'd go with a 3 or 4pm start time, it sounds like it works best for you and DS. I also tend to think about my guests (people pleaser that I am!) and think later in the day is better - it gives people their whole morning/early afternoon to themselves. Our parties tend to last forever!

@Tidybee: He's pretty flexible. We were over my sister's on Saturday evening and he bathed with his cousin, then we just jammied him up and fed him his bedtime bottle in his carseat. He went to bed 30 minutes later, fell asleep in the carseat, but stayed asleep on transfer. And slept in 30 minutes later : )

@T.H.O.U.: I think you're right. I think starting at 3 is the best option. My husband will have to deal!

3 pm isn't too late for a party. I would tell guests it starts at 2 pm in case you usually get late arrivals. People will understand if the Bday boy is napping when they first arrive.

@winniebee: It sounds like the ideal time for you would be from 12-2. But I think you have to take your sister's kids nap into account because its at her house.

9-10:30 - Son's Nap
10:30-12 - Open
12-2 - Sister's kids nap
2-3 - Son's Nap
3-7 Open

It looks like you don't have much of a choice!! I would say that starting at 4 pm would be fine. Have an early dinner for everyone at like 5, open presents and eat cake around 6 and everyone should be out of there by 6:30.

I think 3 is a great time to start...you can fire up the grill around 4-4:30 and people can have dinner and leave by the time T needs to go to bed. He might go to bed a bit later that night...but it's his birthday and one night won't throw him totally off (hopefully!)

i would pick the best time for my kid...understanding that some may not make it, due to nap time. i made ours for 1, and hoping he takes a nap at his usual 2-3 hour(preferrably while we eat lol) we'll see though.

It sounds like 3 is the best time, and if you do it any earlier you wont have many guests. I would tell my dh if he has a better idea than please tell me...... But if not were doing 3.

Morning parties work the best for us now, in fact, every one that we've been invited to has been between 10 and noon. Not exactly ideal time for a BBQ though.

Another option is to do it at 4, and as you wrote, put on jammies for the car ride home.

Tough call, but honestly, what everyone told me when I was having my party was to do it when it was most convenient for me. People will either come or not come. Hard to cater to everyone. That said, if everyone can't make it, then I'd do time that majority of people can make.

Have a great party!

Can't decide on a start time for DS's first birthday party. It will be mostly family (held at my sister's house, 30 mins away) and some close friends. Casual BBQ.

My son naps 2-3 in the afternoon. My sister's kids are on one nap 12-2. Our friends' kids are on 1 nap (mostly) from like 12-2/1-3. I guess we could have it at 3, but my son goes to bed at 7:30 and the party is 30 mins away.

I don't know when to have it so I haven't sent out invites and it's a month away! I feel like no matter what time we have it, some ppl won't be able to make it or will think it is inconvenient.

I don't know why, but my husband is anti late day (3 p.m.) party. I feel like that might be the best time, though. We'll just go over to my sister's earlier and my son can nap there before the party starts (hopefully) and we'll bring his jammies for the car ride home.

What would you do?
