I can usually swing working from home while kids are sick and my supervisors have been okay with me letting them know I am home and then updating them at the end of the day if it is going to be a pto day or sick day. I really appreciate that flexibility since DH has very little flexibility due to his line of work.

I used to feel bad calling in sick. I'm currently on sick day 2 for myself and I don't feel bad at all. I've realized I need to take care of myself and family first, and the work can wait. No one else is going to put you and your family first.

The responses here are interesting because not long ago we had a similar discussion with our friends, and the women said they felt bad, but none of the men said that.

While I believe that everyone at my work is understanding and I have the time to take, I always feel guilty. Obviously that does not deter me from taking the day if we need it, but I don't like to miss work if I don't have to. We've hit gone through a structural change and I am reporting to someone new and of course this week LO was sick and then I got sick too. So lots of leaving early for appointments and today I am actually home sick for me. So I'm not thrilled about how I "look" to my new boss even though I know it's ok.

Yeah, sometimes I worry that it's being perceived as too much. I try to split it with DH, but I'm the one who's usually home with DS in the morning before daycare (so if he wakes up sick I'm already with him) and I'm the one daycare calls during the day to tell me he's come down with something. I always try to casually drop the info when DH's home with DS, so my boss knows it's not always me.

@regberadaisy: I hope everyone feels better! Hang in there!

I do get nervous calling in, because technically the sick time is for me being sick.... but I hardly ever take actual sick time because I can work from home, so I'm not letting people down too much. It just doesn't look good in my mind. Anyway, I usually come down with what the kids have pretty soon so people know there was legit sickness going on :silly:

I don't get nervous. It is what it is and they are well aware that it has to be me taking time off at the beginning of the year and when T is away for work.

I actually get 5 "family days" every year for appointments, sick kids, etc. Although I had to take 3 days for a sick toddler in my second last week of work before going on mat leave, I felt bad about that.

Nope, not at all. My boss is awesome and super understanding and believes family always comes first, so he never had any problem with me not being able to come in because of the kids.

I think it's hard when the people you work with don't have kids or don't have a good friend or sibling that is in our shoes. My department at work gets it but DH's department does not get it as much so then I take more time because my group gets it more and I miss more work.
I hope your family feels better soon!

@HappyBaker: We have a good contract and a strong teacher Union, so that's why!

It is a big pain to take a sick day only because I have to make subplans (for 3 grade levels). Luckily DS only goes to school 2 days a week, so I don't have to take as much sick time since he is watched by family.

@Alba4: We have about the same. Though they never ask us to differentiate between sick for yourself or for you kid so they kind of just blend together.

I am out today after being out for a personal day on Monday AND it's the day before vacation so I feel a bit sketchy. But LO woke up having an allergic reaction and no way was I sending her to DC. Honestly I feel less guilty staying home with her than I did before when it was just myself. For me I feel like I should be able to suck it up (and I would most times) but for her I feel like it's not fair to her or her caretakers to send her if she's truly sick (even if it's not something contagious like today).

I've never had to do it but our policy does specify the days can be used for sick family members so I know I could if I had to. I would still feel bad about it. I'm the only one with young kids so I don't think it would be that well understood.

I feel badly, I always worry that people will think I am lying...even though I have not ever taken a sick day when I wasn't actually sick.

One thing I've learned though, is that the work waits.

@Alba4: Wow that is an amazing sick policy! I only get 5 days total to share between myself getting sick and watching sick kids!

@regberadaisy: I do always feel bad / guilty because I'm the only one with really young kids at my work so I feel like others don't really understand how often they get sick and might think I'm abusing it...but I always get my work done and am usually online even if I'm home so hopefully they really don't mind.

No, I don't get nervous calling in. My school is family friendly and I hardly call out for myself, so when I'm not there they understand it is legitimate. Pretty much all the staff has their kids in daycare or school, so administration understands. We get 5 family sick days on top of our 15 sick days/year.

Anyone get nervous calling in?

Second day in a row I've called in but there's nothing I can do about it. She's miserable and we'll likely get a call around 9 even if we took her in. She's not contagious. Just is cutting 2 yr molars and has a viral infection.

I really try not to call 2 days in a row if I can help it. But DH is also sick with an eye infection and bronchial infection. MIL just went for cancer treatment yesterday so the kids shouldn't be around her for 24 hours anyway afterwards.

Oh well.
