@psw27: I’ll have to look into that—I’ve never heard of it. The 10 days is factoring in DH working from home a few days. He’s independently employed and time is money for him so it’s hard.

The bright side of all of this is I’ve realized I can take some more vacation time over the summer (and into the fall through Christmas if I don’t get the job I’m waiting on) since I only have a few months left with this employer.

@Pollywog: I think negotiating for unpaid leave would work. Thanks for the tip!

We use Bright Horizons backup care - not sure if that is available to you through either your future employer or your spouse's employer. We can use up to 10 days a year per kid. If I know we are totally jammed on something, we try to get my mom to fly in. Otherwise, I'd be posting on Facebook to find a rotation of backup babysitters - nurses are always great because they work random hours and tend to be available on weekdays. Can your husband also commit to covering some of these days?

I've had two union jobs with strict leave rules (no taking leave in the first 6 months and no negotiations on leave amounts). For the first job I negotiated to get x number of days of leave without pay to use in the first 6 months (essentially being part time with full time benefits). With my second job I negotiated to borrowing leave and leave without pay for previously scheduled commitments. I've learned leave is always negotiable.

Before you start is definitely the time to negotiate for flexibility. Ask for the opportunity to work from home on a limited basis and if you can borrow vacation time. Let them know now that you have family priorities and that you will be a better worker if you can balance that.

Alternatively, our area has day camps at the YMCA and through the local park and rec dept for off days. You have to sign-up ahead of time, but they're affordable at $30-$40/day. We have a ton of half-days and teacher work days in our school schedule.

I had the same situation as @graceandjoy: where I was out of leave after maternity leave (in the negative actually because of an HR error)

Granted I already had clout with my managers, but I was able to negotiate a flexible schedule and opportunities to work from home.

Maybe talk to them up front to see if (with enough notice) you you can work longer days during the week to get one day off for planned teacher days/holidays, or if you can work from home those days

Unfortunately in our area we don’t have one day camps. You have to be signed up for before and/or after school care to do those ones, which you have to pay for. We might end up having to do one of those which would suck up the additional salary I’d make 😭.

I could try negotiating days off with one of the positions. I hadn’t thought of that before. I know with the other one there isn’t any negotiating and like with my current employer there’s an association policy for how time is accrued and used and they are very careful about treating everyone equally. I’m actually going to guess the one I’m waiting to hear back about right now is going to be similar. With my current employer I accrue 14 hours of vacation/month, 8 hours of sick, and I have 3 “floating holidays” (basically you can use your New Years Eve, Good Friday, and Columbus Day holidays whenever you want), and 4 personal days. All unused sick and half of the total accrued vacation can be carried over. It’s pretty robust and I’ll definitely miss it.

This is probably totally out there but we have talked about having a third—maybe it’s time to bite the bullet and aim for summer break or the various winter breaks for maternity leave (I would at least get paid family leave).

I also have an elementary school aged kid and know all about the many school holidays.

In our area there are a ton of one day camps for the random minor school holidays - could you look into something like that? Its a lot of the same places that have summer day camps (gymnastics, karate, YMCA, rec center, science/coding activity centers, etc). We've also occasionally had babysitters come on school holidays or used grandparent care.

@erinbaderin: In the companies I have worked for you accrue a certain number of vacation hours each pay period. So I get 2 weeks off each year but I have to wait until I accrue enough hours to take a vacation day.

You don’t get time off when you start a new job? Is that pretty standard? How long does it take you to build up time off? (Sorry, this isn’t helpful advice, I just can’t believe that’s the policy!)

While a lot of big companies won’t budge on more PTO, I’ve aways been able to borrow PTO from a future pay period. That kind of thing is usually at the manager’s discretion.

When I got an offer for the company I work for now, they would not budge on PTO either.

This happens to me after every maternity leave; I had to use up all my PTO first and after mat leave, I start over with nothing. It's been tough; but we have family around so we've made it work. I'm going to have my 3rd next year and I'm seriously going to try to figure out if there's anyway I can not loose all my PTO prior to going on mat leave.

So I have a soon-to-be 2nd grader and a 2.5 year old. Luckily the daycare is only closed on major holidays so I don't really have to worry about that.

For the older child, we utilize the camps provided by the school's after care program. We've used it for spring break and ski week. They also get two weeks off for the holidays, camp covers 5-6 days depending on how the holidays fall.

Our area also has camps throughout the year for spring break, ski week and winter break. Plus the one-off holidays when schools aren't open. https://www.activityhero.com/ is a great resource. I used them to find summer camps for this year.

I also agree with @jennlin821:, go in knowing what you want and ask for it. My company won't budge on time off, but it makes up for it by letting me work from home when I need to.

When you negotiate make it part of our new job package. Figure out ahead of time how many days you need for childcare then add a week for vacation - Then add another week on top of that. That extra week is your negotiating room, they will negotiate down to where you want to be.

I'm don't know what your job is, but if you have a career I would expect the new job to offer similar vacation time to what you have previously built up.

I think we need some more detail about the job change situation to help you out more!

I'm going to be starting a new job sometime in the next year, and just realized that means I will essentially end up with no time off. We have one child in elementary school, so throughout the year have about 18 days where there either isn't school or there is a school break that we don't have child care coverage for. Right now I typically use vacation or personal time for about 3/4 of those instances, and we are able to fill in with family or my husband working from home in the other instances. This also doesn't account for sick time.

For other Bees who started a new job, how did you manage child care? I think for a few of those days we could probably get a high school student to watch her but I'm looking at at least 10 days where I have no options (and not being able to take a vacation for one or two years which sucks but I guess I have to suck it up).
