@Mrs. Jump Rope: I had to sit on a step too!

One of my friends has a 'sad chair' her LOs do time-outs in, and I've always thought it was so funny. She painted a frowny face on it.

We had time out on the couch in the living room growing up!

I know with dogs when they are bad they shouldn't be sent to their crate.. so maybe the same with kids?! LOL can you tell I only have dogs at this point? :)

I want my LO's to associate their beds with comfort and rest so time outs are done down stairs in a corner (I keep a little timer down there).

I always said I would never use the bedroom as a negative place. But he very early decided it wasn't where he wanted to be. So since it isn't his room anyways, we do use it for timeouts. He hates it.

I agree with Z@Maysprout: if she needs to cool out and recollect herself we will put her in her room and she will usually play for a minute and calm down. If she has done something bad (hit, bite, Etc) we take her to the hall and make her face the corner for a bit.

Once in awhile if she just needs to cool down she has a time out in her room but it's only once in awhile and it's more so I don't have to worry about her hurting herself and she'll get distracted with stuff in her room. So far it works for us she'll get herself calm and start playing and even comes out and says sorry. She still loves her room but I guess we're not really using it for punishment. I think I'd worry too about making her bed a bad girl spot but so far the way we've been doing it hasn't affected her love of her room.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: omg once I was about 9-10 I was in that phase where I didn't mind being alone and liked going to my room haha! That's when my mom started grounding me FROM my room! That made me so mad.

@MamaBehr: omg he sounds absolutely adorable. I would die of the cuteness. My son is 18 mos old but we haven't done any time outs yet. I'm not sure where to do them.

Time outs in our house are on the bottom stair, no toys, no talking, no moving. We make a big deal about setting a timer, so DD and DS know they have to wait for the timer to beep. DD is also old enough to give her the "one, two, three" countdown, so she can choose to change her behavior.

I never did it in the crib or a pack n' play because I want part of the punishment being that they choose not to move (I will restart the timer if they do move, and sometimes this can result in a much longer timeout). DD never had a trouble with it when we started timeouts at 18 months or so. DS totally gets the no moving rule, after seeing his sister in timeout, but he doesn't get that it is a punishment yet. He giggles to himself the whole time and just repeats "time out" over and over again. He's 18 months old.

@Mrs. High Heels: she'd be like "time out is over!!" and we were like "oh okay....." and wouldn't come ou of our rooms. I had my books, my brother had his Nintendo, my sister had her dolls. Why would we want to leave? LOL. Silly mom.

But when she caught on & made us sit on the darn steps... UGH. Torture.

We've only done a handful of timeouts but I do them in her room, but not the bed specifically. I haven't noticed any negative associations with her room as a result. She sleeps fine and likes to play in her room.

I really worry that timeout in her crib will make her associate it with discipline, especially after we worked so hard to sleep train her.

As she approaches her secon birthday, her independence and defiance has exploded. We very rarely have to give a time out, but when we do we HAVE to... And yes, we will put her in her crib. She knows she's done something very wrong, and we let her be there for one minute.

So far, it hasn't changed her sleeping pattern... But we've only had to do this a handful of times!

Growing up, time outs were also in our bedroom... But that's also where our toys were so we didn't mind! After mom caught on, she made us sit on the steps. Boo!

I don't think we will be doing time outs, but I can see how discipline being linked to bed would be not so good. I think every kid is different!

I agree with that sentiment about how it will psychologically affect them, so I try to do time outs in very neutral areas (in a corner, on the stairs, a timeout bench/chair), and not somewhere that I'd want them to have positive associations with.

We do time outs in her room now (she rarely gets time outs now because she knows what they are and doesn't like them!).

Her sleep hasn't been affected, and she still loves her room. I think being separated from us is what bothers her.

Growing up I was usually put in time out in my room. Although we also had the time out corner and my mom would have us "put our nose in the corner" and we'd have to stand there for as many minutes as we were old (six minutes for a six year old).

I know most families I've known usually do timeouts in the child's bed, especially at toddler/preschool age when they cannot get out of timeout in a crib.

I read once though that this can psychologically affect their sleep because then their bed is associated with discipline, as opposed to only sleep. I don't know how accurate this is or how widespread it may be.. It makes sense to me though!

What are your thoughts on this? I'm sure we'll be implementing time outs fairly soon here but I'm unsure how I will do them.
