Thanks ladies...you are giving me some hope. :) I'll look more into the law and ask my principal again.

@Teachermama: I don't know for sure but I highly doubt it only applies to federal agencies. I'm not working for a federal company and it applies to me. I don't see why it wouldn't apply to teachers! You should check out the link Rock N Roll posted.

@Teachermama: I think it depends on the number of employees within a certain radius. I would imagine that schools would be included.

I pump 2-3 times per day and it usually takes about 20 minutes. My work day is from 8-5 (9 hours) but we get a half hour lunch and two 15 minute breaks. So pumping 3 times for 20 minutes is still within my hour of break time.

If you need to get an extra pumping session in, think about pumping in the car on the way to work or in the car really quick once you have arrived at work.

Does anyone know if that law applies to all employers? Or just federal agencies? Someone told me that teachers are not covered by that law. When I asked my principal about pumping, she mentioned nothing about providing me a place or time for it.

@Rock n Roll: Thanks for the link!

I actually just received an email from our office manager who handles some HR stuff. And they pretty much are complying with that.

I think it depends on the state you're in.

When I was pumping, I did it 3 times most days. It took a lot of time. Sometimes I would work and sometimes I wouldn't. I definitely noticed the difference -- if I was stressed I produced less.

One thing to consider if you drive to work is pumping in the car on the way to/from work.

I pump 4x per day (sometimes 3 if I have to). I try to pump for at least 15 minutes each time, even if I'm not getting anything because I'm trying to keep my supply up. With set-up and breakdown, it takes about 20 -25 minutes. I bring my laptop with me so I don't miss too much.

Each pumping session for me lasted anywhere from 30-45 minutes and I would do it 2-3 times per day. At my office as long as we get our billable hours in we can work when/how we need to. It made for very long days but it is just a new "normal" to get used to.

There is no time in the law. It only states "reasonable breaks to accomodate to the expression of milk." Keep in mind that these breaks should be given in addition to your lunch, so technically, you are ok. I work in a field where we arent watched hourly, so I pump 3-4 times daily. I can tell you that the longer you go, the shorter and more efficient the sessions are. I can leave my desk, get to the room, pump, and be back within ten minutes.

I was the same way when I came back to work. I hated the fact that I spent so much time away while pumping. I actuall pump 4x per day and spend about 20-30 min each time... so that's 2 hours that I'm pumping, and then I'm usually gone another hour for lunch. I felt like I was taking SO much time away from work!

It took me a good month to get in the groove of working and pumping and still feeling like I'm doing a good job at both of them.

I'm not sure what the law states - do you have an HR department you can talk to about it?

Yesterday was my first day back at work. I pumped twice even though ideally I would like to pump 3 times. Time spent away from my desk was 20minutes each time. So a total of 40minutes each day.
I get a 30minute lunch which I typically work through. So I still have 10minutes each day I'm spending extra pumping. That's 50minutes in a week! Almost one hour!
I hope to just be able to come in a little earlier or leave a little later each day to make up for it.

My boss isn't a stickler about time as long as you get your work done. I just feel personally compelled that I'm not taking advantage especially since we bill clients hourly.
And because one of my co-workers that sits next to me loves to watch the clock! I know with this daily occurrence he'll feel compelled to make comments *rolleyes*

Anyway, how do you deal with time spent pumping throughout the work day?
Anyone know what the "law" is, if any, for moms pumping at work related to time spent? Just curious
