My dd wanted to go potty after she picked out her own underwear and seat. Maybe that might motivate her. We told her she had to keep Anna dry or she wont be able to wear her anymore.

Crossing my fingers for a dry day for you!

@plantains: DS did this too on/off for about a week. Def agree with @hilsy, that it's just takes a lil longer time to get used to going sitting down!

@plantains: I think once they do it once or twice, it just clicks...for my LO i think it was more about getting used to actually being able to poop in a sitting position on the potty, and being ok with seeing it in the potty after it came out!

@hilsy85: Aha, great idea! I will give her some more time to adjust to her new normal and get used to always going on the potty and then I will try that. She went to daycare in underwear today, hopefully it goes okay and she isn't to distracted to remember to use the potty!

@plantains: yay! I think the holding in poop is really normal. My friend said she gave her son prunes for breakfast and then a few hours later told him he would get a LOT of chocolate if he pooped on the potty.

So I took away diapers bribed with chocolate and she has gone on the potty pretty much every time. She is averaging about one accident a day so far which I think is amazing! I guess I will send her to daycare in underpants tomorrow. Yikes!

@Me3: This is interesting...thanks! My son turned 3 in April, but we've been potty training for MONTHS. He does not consistently pee on the potty, and has pooped exactly 3 times. I have no idea what the deal is, but we do remind him a lot. He also never asks, and has never gone on his own unless he's naked. But it hasn't really felt like a power-struggle, so I don't know. Maybe I'll try just not talking about it and switch to underwear 100 percent of the time. I tried the 3 day method a few months ago, and he just wore his poop/pee underwear and clothes around like it was no big deal.

@plantains: We did a combo: Daniel Tiger's potty episode (and religiously singing that song almost every day a few times a day), new undies, reward chart, and her nanny share friend is potty trained. Reward chart didn't work for us, but the undies, DT, and having her friend potty trained did work.

The bottomless thing didn't work for us either, but I know it's worked for a lot of people. Good luck!

@plantains: yeah, I thought that I needed to take him every 30 min to 1 hour, and he would throw a fit. Finally, I just decided that if he was able to hold it, that was ok--I had to kind of trust that he knew his body. One friend told me her son held it for 12 hours while potty training!

@hilsy85: this actually sounds like L and likely is part of the problem. She doesn't need to go at the times that I have been taking her to the potty. I think I will trek to Target in BK and see what little bits and pieces I can pick up to entice her.

I think going naked at home was really helpful for us.

Also, you need to figure out what kind of reward works well for your child. For my LO, food was not effective. We did a rewards grab bag--I bought a ton of tiny Cars themed favors, and every time he wore underwear (one of our battles) or went on the potty, he got to pick something. Once he was motivated, it worked very quickly.

ETA my LO also got REALLY mad when I tried to force him to go every hour or two hours. At 2.5 he is perfectly capable of holding it for 3+ hours, so don't be surprised if your LO doesn't need to/want to go as often as you might think!

@Freckles: I have some Minnie underwear from target that she does like, I am just worried that she hasn't made the connection to peeing in the potty when she has underwear on. But if she doesn't want to be bottomless I can always go with that.

Dd loves the Fisher price Cheer for me Potty...the motion sensor starts playing music when they go. It really helped her to catch on in the first couple of days.

Day 1 and 2 we let her run around naked and she caught on quickly that she should go in the potty. Then she figured out that she could squat and pee on the floor without getting wet so we put her in underwear (she's obsessed with Frozen). We make a big emphasis to tell her to try and "keep Elsa dry!" and so far it has worked like a charm.

@Freckles: I just bought a Minnie potty seat to attch to the toilet because she is mad about Minnie, and a pink regular potty because I'm thinking maybe the blue and green of the one we currently have doesn't appeal to her? We are going to stay in the house all weekend with no bottoms in an effort to get her to go.

One piece of advice I can give is that the more you force it, the stronger they will refuse...and around 3, they have better control over their bladders and will use it against you! If she doesn't want to go, i would be nonchalant about it but remind her of the reward if she goes.

Would a nicer potty seat that attaches to the toilet be more enticing? I would try and start with a rewards chart and maybe focus on peeing only before tackling poops.

@regberadaisy: reward chart is a really good idea, maybe I can find some Disney stickers or something to excite her.

@Me3: this is a great article, thank you. She is pretty strong willed and independent, so this should help.

@Mrsjets: fingers crossed for a similar result!

@Smurfette: thanks, I will check it out.

@2littlepumpkins: this is kind of us. She gets put on the potty 4 times a day at daycare and has never once gone! She just sits there. At home she will do the same, sit for a few minutes and then pee as soon as you let her get off. I think as long as I let her have pull ups she will never go in the potty.

I feel like it took us forever but finally we're in underwear and he's using the potty consistently. (LO is 3.5)

We started him on the seat that goes on the toilet but he much rather just use the big potty (with a stool) and hold on. I also started with rewards until we got up to big boy underwear and now it's just a regular thing.

My friend's LO's preschool had a great program with potty training, it wouldn't work for us (we don't have laundry and have carpets, so the 3-day, mess as you go approach is out), but it did give some tips that we still use. One was, you don't ask if you have to go, you say, 'it's time to go potty' and even if they just sit, they sit. Never give water or juice out of habit in the stroller, car or playground, only if they ask for it.
My husband still struggles with having patience when J lingers on the potty but I think it's important to encourage and just be supportive to avoid regressions.

You'll get there! :)

My dd likes the potty but is just indifferent to potty training. Today I decided she's going diaper free unless we leave the house. I'm just hoping she'll get sick of peeing on herself...eta, she's almost your daughter's age, and I'm due with #2 in the first half of October.. so we are pretty much in the same boat!

J is 3 (today!) and I swear it just clicked a couple weeks ago. All of a sudden he just got it and more so wanted to do it "all by myself!" It's so awesome! I never really stressed but I did push for months and honestly I think he was just ready. He gets a pez candy after ever pee and a Hershey kiss after every poo. And I very rarely prompt him to go.

He dosent like the baby potty - he much prefers a kid toilet seat that fits on our toilets. We bring one out with us to friends/family. He wears underwear in the house but still uses pulls up for bed time, outings and when we play outside but he's always dry, I think I'm just scared. Plus I reuse the same one all day so it isn't pricey or anything.

They're all so different, good luck!

I'm not sure if this will be helpful yet, but we had some issues with potty refusal after a few weeks of mostly successful potty training. If you get there, this article was very useful to me. It's specifically for children 3 and up who have trouble potty training. http://www.rogerknapp.com/medical/pottytrainingrefusals.htm
Once I told my son he was completely in charge of his potty needs and stopped reminding him to go (combined with the incentive program they talk about where the child gets access to an incentive for a limited amount of time after each successful potty trip), we had a lot of success. Just in case your kid is strong-willed like mine, thought I'd pass the info along. :)
