Congrats! I hope I can pump for a year! I'm at 4 months and I can't stand the sight or sound of my pump. ;-)

I also recently made it to a year, but I never pump anymore so I'm having a heck of a time weaning. I wish you much success, and please let us know how it goes!

We called it hanging up the horns. It is very freeing. I started by cutting down to once a day at work and then the milk magically went away!

@yin: wow! And congrats! One year is definitely a huge achievement...especially with your dietary restrictions. And darn those clogged ducts...I'm battling my first one currently and yes, it sucks.

I pumped for 7 long months. I probably would have pumped for longer but I wasn't producing a lot at the end and then I got pregnant again. But I am proud of myself for surpassing my goal of six months.

Congrats on making it to a year! That is a wonderful accomplishment.

@Mrs. Bee: I am hoping to be able to wean within a month. Knowing that it can happen in 2 weeks is so encouraging. While it sounds simple to just drop a pump every couple of days, I think I am mentally too attached. Since I'm still feeding my LO breast milk, I feel the need to still make enough for him. I have a freezer full of milk to last him at least a month, but I can't stop myself from worrying.

@purrpletulips: @Mrs. Bee: @sloaneandpuffy: Thank you for your advice! I just completed week one of weaning, and I have dropped from 5 pumps to 4. I had the perfect pumping routine before (working around my LO's nap schedule), and I feel awful that I have to pump while my LO plays. Hopefully I'll be down to 3 pumps soon. Just afraid of clogged ducts, which I've had 3x since I started weaning...

P.S. I am an exclusive pumper, making weaning from the pump a little more difficult.

@pointybird: A storage closet does not sound like a fun place to pump. :( My least favorite places to pump were bathrooms and inside the car of a busy parking lot. Even though 2013 sounds like a long time away, it will be here sooner than you think. Time flies right by with a baby. :)

@yin: oh and i understand you feeling guilty, and it's easy for me to tell you not to, but i felt the same way when i quit. i couldn't continue to pump and dump though until who knows my milk was good again, so i made peace with my decision to wean.

there is another alternative... you could continue to pump but drop one pumping session every couple of days until you're down to one or two. that way you're not quitting cold turkey, and you have some time to decide to wean completely. no reason why it has to be all or nothing!

I'm in this process right now, down to pumping just once a day only on my long work days (I work a ten hr day once a week). It is SO liberating! Good luck, and do not feel guilty for stopping now...you have been able to provide a whole year of milk to your baby...that is a lucky baby these days!

congratulations! i know what a huge accomplishment that is!

i was exclusively pumping when i stopped at 9 months because i ingested pesticides and charlie was allergic. i did what sloaneandpuffy did by going longer between sessions, then dropping a pumping session, until i was all done. it took me about 2 weeks if i remember correctly, and it wasn't hard at all.

Congratulations! I am counting down the days until I can turn in my pump (3 more months!) I am hoping to stop pumping at work and then just nurse at night until I can wean her from nursing.

Congrats! When I was ready to stop pumping I sort of postponed each session by an hour, then more, until I dropped a pump, then two, then all of them and I was done. (I only pumped at work.) This did not take as long as I thought!

I did (and do) continue to bf my babe in the morning and afternoon/evening.

Aww. GREAT job!!! Congrats to having your body back! :D
LO is still nursing and doesn't want to wean yet. I have no idea how I'm going to wean her when the time comes--kinda hoping she weans herself!

I pumped for 10 months while working (nursed total of 14). Depending upon how quickly you want to stop you could reduce your pumping by one session every couple of days (or each week) until you are completely done.

That's awesome! You should be proud!

I have been pumping regularly for two weeks now, since I just returned to work. I am hoping to pump until my LO is a year old, sooooo...two weeks down, eight months to go! I love that it gives me a connection to my baby and I know I'm doing something good for her. But sometimes I can't believe I'm going to be ducking into a glorified storage closet at the office three times a day until 2013!

... because I have officially met my ultimate pumping goal of one year!!! I am so excited and yet so sad to be weaning. It has been a huge sacrifice but worth every single minute of pumping to be able to provide for my LO. Long gone are the days of pumping every 2 hours, clogged ducts, and mastitis. I've also been on a restricted diet on and off since the 3rd trimester of my pregnancy (gestational diabetes & LO has a wheat and dairy allergy). It will be heavenly to finally eat without any constraint.

Now onto weaning... I don't know how to approach it. Pumping has become part of my life in a way that I never knew was possible, and it's difficult to imagine the day when I can go an entire day without being hooked up to the pump or washing parts. I have spent the last year figuring out how to pump more milk, not less. My fear is not knowing how to properly wean off the pump. :(

Is it wrong for me to feel guilty for weaning? Yes, I provided a whole year of breast milk for my LO, but I can't get rid of this feeling that maybe I should keep going for a little longer...

Have you weaned off the pump recently? If you are currently pumping, are you looking forward to the day when you can finally put away the pump?
