@littlek: I just read that you ovulate on your own. From my experience, I think it's true that Clomid doesn't really help if you ovulate on your own, which I do, too. It can also thin your lining and cause other side effects. Not trying to be a downer, but I would recommend skipping it. You should also listen to this podcast.. very helpful. http://www.creatingafamily.org/radioshow/clomid-medicated-iui-or-straight-to-ivf.html

I've done both TI and IUI with clomid. my particular results have been the same with both in terms of % of BFPs. IUI gives you a slight advantage, and you often trigger to try to line up the timing almost exactly. my RE prefers to do IUI supposedly to limit your exposure to meds (i.e., give you the maximum chance in each cycle). but I think in reality that difference is small for people without male factor.

but with your results I'd think TI makes sense for a few cycles at least. I certainly wouldn't pay OOP for an IUI yet.

@MrsTal: all three cycles together added up to a couple hundred! Sorry that wasn't clear before! I think we paid about $65 each month? I don't if that is typical? We got the prescription from Walgreens and my insurance didn't cover any of it.

We did TI with other meds, but the goal wasn't to have more than one follicle, just a perfectly sized, perfectly timed follicle. That made monitoring really important, so I was going every other day and using a trigger shot. I have DOR and that's what worked for me when IUI/IVF didn't.

@twodoghouse: Your clomid was a couple hundred? Why so much? I am kind of with you with with the unexplained infertility being bull but that's my current diagnosis as well, so I might just be bitter. Haha.

@littlek: My RE is having us do TI with femara as I have a ovulating cycles. I'm only getting the cd21 progesterone test. I had the option between clomid and femara and went with the latter after reviewing the side effects. If I don't get pregnant after 3 rounds of femara,, we will revisit our next step. That being said, I have friends who got pregnant after being on clomid and TI. Good luck in what you decide is the best option for you and your family.

@littlek: my RE explained it like this: we have an anovulatory issue, not make factor, so while IUI would increase our chances of achieving pregnancy slightly (I think the stats were TI 20%, IUI 25%) it wouldn't necessarily benefit us (unless we had failed TI cycles) because we already know his sperm can meet my egg. All the IUI would do is make his sperm have to travel less!

We did 2 cycles of TI for Chloe & 3 for this baby. We planned to move on to IUI in January (and likely switch to femera) if I didn't get pregnant in December.

I did TI plus oral meds and have a 3 month old now :). I started out on Clomid but I didn't respond well so I switched to Femara. My successful cycle I did Femara and a couple doses of Gonal-F (injectable) and Ovidrel trigger. For us TI (with monitoring) was all we needed because our problem was completely the fact that I didn't ovulate.

And really, unless you have a male factor issue, or you have some sort of internal issue that's blocking the sperm from getting to the uterus, then IUI only gives you a tiny bit more of an advantage over TI.

@littlek: Was it the RE who said it was unexplained IF? Sometimes I think that's sort of a cop out diagnosis, but I'm not a dr so obviously I don't really know. It just seems like there has to be SOMETHING going on if you're doing all the "right" things (good timing, etc) and it's still not working. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for a bfp soon or at least some clarity in how to proceed!

We did the same as @jmarionsmith: for three rounds, only doing monitoring on the last one. It wasn't too expensive without the monitoring - maybe a couple hundred dollars for clomid, so it seemed worth it to try that first. However, ovulation wasn't really the problem with me so Clomid could only get us so far. Do you have a diagnosis or any hint of what could be causing your issues? I think Clomid is a good first step but I wouldn't waste a ton of time on it if test results come back that you are ovulating ok.

I'm doing clomid and TI right now. First, have all your tests been normal? Blood work, HSG, SA?

My RE recommended clomid and TI because I am ovulating regularly, HSG was clear, and DH SA was good, he just thinks it will give us more/more mature eggs to shoot for. Also it's super cheap, without insurance it was like $12 for a month plus my blood test which actually should be covered by insurance because it's coded as a diagnostic test. We will try this for 3 months and see what happens.

@jmarionsmith: I think I can do that through my OB/Gyn and it would be covered through our insurance. IF we go with the RE they would want to do monitoring and that would cost $500 out of pocket.

Before I was referred to my RE my gynecologist put me on clomid and we had TI. There wasn't any monitoring, besides a 21 day progesterone test (blood draw) to confirm ovulation. I got pregnant twice doing that, but miscarried really early with both. After that clomid stopped working so I was referred to my RE.

Sorry for the plethora of questions.. but I'm type A. Has anyone done timed intercourse plus clomid? Thoughts? When I was talking to DH last night he thought it was a waste of money (we have pay out of pocket) and doesn't see how that's different from what we are already doing. I know the doctor will explain more but I was curious for peoples personal experience. DH sees the value of IUI but not TI.
