@Ms.Badger: Same here. I wasted so much time timing BH. My real contractions started after my water broke.

You'll know ! For what it's worth, my contractions never were consistent in frequency or duration in active labor. I went to the hospital because my water started leaking (gbs +) and contractions were getting more painful. I thought they'd send me home because they were nowhere near the 5-1-1 rule. I was 5cm in active labor and baby came 6 hours later.

Also, bh for me was just a hard stomach. Contractions started in my back and wrapped around to the front. Felt like someone tightening a belt around your waist!

I think it's hard - it varies with each labor!

my first daughter they were consistently and obviously time-able. beginning, peak, end. they didn't start til after my water broke, though, so it was obvious that I had to hit the hospital anyway.

my second they all ran together and was like one giant, painful upset stomach cramp. it was awful - no break! still led very quickly to water breaking and active labor. there was actually never much to time.

Ditto that there's no mistaking real contractions. If you feel your BH are getting quite regular it doesn't hurt to time them. When you're stomach is already hard is a fine time to start.

I just wanted to add that just because they are regular and fairly close together doesn't necessarily mean anything regarding labor. I had unnoticeable to a little uncomfortable contractions always 7 minutes apart for more than a week before my water broke.

You'll know real contractions. They'll stop you in your path and take the wind out of you. There's contraction apps too. I remember DH timing mine that way when I was still in denial that it was labor until we got into the car.

If you feel like you're getting a lot of BH's, you can always stop and focus on it. And there's also nothing wrong with timing from peak to peak instead of start to start. Might work better for you since you're not noticing them right away. But like everyone said, you'll probably know when it's real!

I got a ton of Braxton hicks contractions I was pretty worried about knowing when real ones came. Turns out for me there was no mistaking actual contractions. They hurt!

How did you know when to start timing contractions? I have been getting a ton of BH, but I never know if I should be paying attention to them or not.....they aren't painful or anything, just a bit bothersome. Plus I feel like they are really hard to time, because i mostly notice them once my belly is hard already.
