@PawPrints: Thanks for your response. I agree that it is a huge safety issue. We are getting a new crib that will allow us to drop the mattress to the floor. She didn't crawl out last night and I think she realizes that she can get hurt doing it. If I think its going to be a problem before the new crib arrives, I will put her in the pack and play that has higher sides. I just don't think she has the ability to be in a toddler bed yet. She generally sleeps through the night and I feel like I will be doing her a disservice by switching her to something that i know she doesn't have the ability to handle.

This was almost exactly our situation a couple years ago. DD was about 22 months and started climbing out, one month before we moved. We didn't have a choice, we tried a sleep sack and it added about 30 seconds to the time it took her to climb out.

I guess I'm the minority on this thread, but this is a major safety issue and if the kid is climbing out regularly, I strongly feel it's time for the crib to go. You don't want to end up in the ER. Yes it's a tough transition, it was extremely hard for us, but we got through it.

@MrstypeA: You are amazing to reply and offer your great knowledge. Thank you so much! I'm going to do all I can to keep her in the crib one way or another.

Certified sleep consultant here! Prior to 3yo they really lack impulse control and don’t understand imaginary boundaries. Often times they will climb out and be scared by what happened. If you see them start climbing out teach a firm “no!” As if he/she was reaching for something on the hot stove! It is just as dangerous. Try these things
1. Turn the. Crib around if the back is higher.
2. If possible take out the bottom grate and put the mattress on the floor. Be sure that there aren’t any gaps between the mattress and crib and that the crib isn’t easily moved.
3. Stay firm and consistent.
4. Add positive sleep speak 3x a day. “Mommy and daddy love to sleep! “We need sleep to get big and strong” “Elmo sleeps in his bed just like you!” Etc. Super simple statement And move on.

You got this! Stay strong!

With DD1 after she did it once there was no going back. With DD2 there were several months before we had to switch her out, beginning around age 2. We told her she could hurt herself and to not do it, but I think she really just liked her crib. We just put her into a toddler bed because she started consistently climbing out, so that was about 5 months between first escape attempt and needing to transition

Also: transitioning her was SO much easier than with DD1. I didn’t make a big deal about it and was basically like here’s where you’re sleeping now. I think making a big deal (getting new bedding, talking about it a lot) really backfired with DD1. Plus if your DD is in daycare she’s used to sleeping not in a crib so that would help.

My 2 year old climbed out of her crib on her second birthday...sweet. Cue major mommy tears. She was very scared - but thankfully un-injured.

DH and I agreed we could let it slide but if she did it again we would act immediately. Her pack n play is much less easy to climb out of - so that was our plan b should we need it at a moments notice. We dont leave her in her crib as much anymore (shes 2.5 now and more trustworthy around our stairs)...the climbing incident occurred when we had placed her in her crib to read books for a few minutes while DH and I got ready.

At the time, we felt sleep wise she was ready for a big girl bed but freedom wise we were concerned. She'll be 2.5 in 2 weeks and we are moving her to the toddler bed this weekend...no more breakout attempts from her...I think she was spooked straight.

My friend dropped the mattress to the floor of her sons crib when he climbed out. Not sure if that’s possible for you but it worked for her.

@agold: ahhh! I am dreading my son wanting to get out of his crib. He'll be 3 in Jan and sleeps like a dream in his crib (for now). So when he lifted his leg like he was going to climb out at about 26 months, I was like Ohhhhh, No no no buddy, you will FALL and get a BIG boo boo on your head! Gotta stay in the crib all night! My son is very injury-wary and isn't defiant so he got all scared and was like Oh, ok! Won't do it!! And hasn't tried it since. Could you tell her she might get a boo boo if she tries to climb out? I imagine the fear tactic only works on certain types of kids.

@agold: my husbands plan is basically to build a small wooden platform for the mattress so that it’s up against the bottom rail that he can’t get an arm stuck or something.

@Mrsbells: I can do that, but I don’t want to! :silly:

@MrsKRB: I was hoping someone would say this! I am hoping amazon delivers a sleep sack to me before bedtime. I am going to try the crib another time.

@Silva: this is exactly what someone I know suggested to me a few minutes ago. I want to do this! I looked at her crib and aside from the springs, there is a wooden ledge all around the bottom. It’s about 3 inches wide. So I can’t put the crib right to the bottom. Should I get a saw and cut that off? Can you tell me what kind of crib you have? I’d seriously buy another crib if it meant I could drop the mattress to the floor.

Mine tried. We flipped the crib around so that the shorter rail was against the wall. The next step will be dropping the mattress to the floor, but keeping it within the rails. My two year old is not ready to come out of the crib yet.

My four-days-shy of a 2 year old climbed out of her crib last night. Is this game over for me? Do I need to switch her to toddler bed ASAP today or can I try out a toddler sleep sac? I’d love to hear your thoughts! She’s very well sleep trained and I wonder if she’s ready for the freedom of a toddler bed. We are also moving in about 3 weeks.
