Ugh, this is so tough! I felt like when we were TTC I always planned for how different life events would be....our vacations and planned trips, the summer, our anniversary, Thanksgiving, weddings...because I would be pregnant during those times. Well, turns out it took us 8 months to get a healthy pregnancy, so my worrying over that stuff was for naught. My general thought is to proceed with your TTC plans because you never know how long it will take. However, I do have to say that if I knew I would have to travel for the wedding (ie, fly) and if it was a very close friend or sibling, I would hold off on TTC for a month or so if it looked like I would be 34 + weeks pregnant at the wedding. Usually, doctors won't let you fly after something like 34 weeks. Otherwise, I wouldn't care about being hugely pregnant and a bridesmaid : )

I am totally with you. It's so nerve wracking, but the thing is you can't control it. At. All. So, I would just try, and don't let the ttc thing get in the way of real life. That's what decision I've come to. My DH will be getting his master's degree next March in California and I so want to plan that trip but I am still ttc so... I've just decided we'll deal with it when it happens.

How about you stop taking bc NOW? Like today! Or tomorrow? I don't know if this is always the case, but I was ON BC when I got pregnant. I had missed a few days here and there and stopped taking the entire last week's worth of pills. Got pregnant!
I wouldn't be too concerned with your friend's wedding. You and your (family's) needs come first. I almost missed my cousin's wedding because my LO was 8 weeks old and exclusively nursing. Cousin called her wedding off so it wasn't an issue, but I'm sure your friend will understand.
Good luck!! :D

I think you should start TTC now, I dont think you have to hold off because of a friends wedding.

Wow, these are all such thoughtful and insightful responses so far, thank you everyone! I have already decided not to wait to start TTC, only because I feel like there will always be a reason to wait and it's time for us to start allowing it to happen. I'm over 30 now and we just bought an apartment, it's time.

I actually have every reason to believe it will take me a long time to get pregnant because both times I stopped taking the pill in the past it took almost a full year for me to get my period. I know it could be different this time, but the chances are stacked against that so I'm willing to risk it.

And of course my friend will be totally understanding of whatever situation I find myself in, even if I can't attend her wedding at all. I'm not worried about her being upset, I'm just worried about missing her wedding and feeling bummed about it!

My personal opinion is that you can't plan your life around if you might get pregnant, because then there will always be something in the way. I'm sure that your friend will not only understand if you have to miss her wedding, but she'll be happy for you for having a baby! Of course she'll be a little upset that you have to miss it, but she'll get over it.

We are TTC and put a hold on this past cycle because if we had conceived I'd have been due two weeks after I'm MOH at my BFF's wedding.
However, we are only skipping one month. If I'm 8 mos. pregnant at the wedding then that's what happens. If I'm not pregnant by then I won't have anything to worry about.
She probably wouldn't wait a year for her wedding because you are TTC...and I don't think you should wait a year to TTC for her wedding.
Life happens when it happens and it's ok to be pregnant or have an infant at a wedding.
Just my two cents.

I understand.. it's definitely an issue that came across DH and my plate when were deciding to start our TTC journey a few months back.

We have a huge wedding weekend over the Memorial holiday, our best couple friend who just got engaged over the holidays, and potentially 2-3 more couples getting engaged/married in the next 1.5 year time frame (all of which I will be part of the bridal party).

At first, it bothered me that it may coincide with our baby timeline, but our friends have been more than gracious about it... and honestly, I've come to a decision that having a baby is the most important thing to us as a family right now; while there may be missed events -- all of our friends have more than obliged us to do what's good for us; and that we'll deal with it as the events happen...

Maybe you can hold off until May. That way, you will definitely be able to be there no matter what. I'm 6 months pregnant and just got back from a trip to Mexico, it was no problem. I also have to fly again in a few weeks when I will be 32 weeks. So maybe just try to slow things down a little but not for too long?

I totally understand the timing thing. We REALLY want to start TTC now, but we're holding off because of a similar situation to yours.

I'm not really sure if I'm looking for advice or just support, but here is my issue..

I have two weeks left on my current birth control and after that I'm stopping completely so DH and I can start TTC. I understand that it could take years potentially and there's no use worrying about future plans but I am worrying anyway.

My best friend is about to get engaged and she's already set a date for January 2013 and asked me to be a bridesmaid which I happily accepted. The wedding is going to be in CA and we live in NYC which has started to worry me a little. What if I get pregnant right away and either have a newborn or am in my 3rd trimester during her wedding? I am so worried I won't be able to go either because I can't fly or I don't want to leave a newborn with a babysitter.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? I know if I were reading this post I would just think "Duh, don't worry about it until it happens" , but I am worried! :(
