@rubies- maybe your LO needs an earlier bedtime! Like 5pm!

daylight savings totally screw up our schedule -.- Eli has been waking up at 6ish and he just hasn't been sleeping well because of the 1 hour shift :(

@reggie: sounds like its working out!

Our LO was put to bed at 7:00pm today. He didnt cry until we decided to check up on him and interrupted him sucking his thumb while not asleep but on his way there. Then he proceeded to cry for the next hour. Not anything like the nights before, but a little bit of complaining and a few bouts of "where the heck are ya" types of cry...we are starting to see some improvements. Its still a very tough process for me. Our naps were a little tough today to, but it looks like he wants to stay up for 2 hours in btwn wake time instead of the 1.25 that i've been trying to put him into.

Okay, get this. LO cried like a mutha' all night and kept waking up every hour so I was certain she would be exhausted today. We had a playdate and she didn't nap AT ALL. All day, she was awake. On our way home from playdate, she fell asleep and stayed asleep (in her carseat) from 5-8pm. I thought, "Great, we're screwed tonight." But, she woke up, I changed her into her pjs and nursed her. She nursed for 20 minutes on one boob. Gurgled in my lap for 10 minutes and fed on the other boob for an additional 10 minutes. She started falling asleep so I whacked a burp out of her (heh heh), swaddled her and she fell asleep in her pack'n'play, no problem! That was at 9pm...It's now 10:26pm. What the heck...I have no idea what this sleeping crap is all about now. SIGH!

so we did something differently today... I gave him a bath at 5:20pm.. his bedtime bottle at 5:30pm... he finished at 5:50pm.. I burped him, swaddled him, put him to bed at 6:00pm.. he screamed for 10 minutes and spitted up.. so I gave up and scooped him up and he stopped crying immediately. I put him in his rocker, put on some music with the room dimmed. Left him to do some dishes. The plan was to feed him again at 7:30pm and put him to bed at 8:00pm since he has been falling asleep at 8:00pm every night of this week after crying/fussing for an hour or more.

What happened? I came into the room and just sat next to him on the glider and started to read my book (healthy sleeping habits, happy child, thanks tina!).. he was just calmly sucking his fists and looking around the room. Then suddenly from the corner of my eye I saw him slowly closing his eyes! So immediately I swaddled him, placed him in his crib, turn on the white noise, and left the room. He fell asleep immediately and that was 7:00pm! I guess tomorrow, I'll try the same thing, I'll start bedtime routine early.. and just sit with him until he starts to doze off!

@redboots- We have been letting Eli cry a bit before his naps and bedtime... in the past, he has no problem sleeping at bedtime so there wasn't much crying at all.. During his daytime naps though, he used to have a lot of trouble staying asleep so I would just let him cry for 15minutes to see if he would go back to sleep, and more often than not, he would. This week, I've just been putting him down for nap time w/o soothing at all... simply swaddling, turning on the white noise, and then i put him in his crib. Most of the time, he falls sleep on his own w/o crying.. or very little crying. He is going to be 12 weeks this Sunday and I'm hopeful! And Eli also sleeps much better when he is able to soothe himself to sleep... but I think that's because whenever he can do that, he was not overtired... so that's why he was able to sleep longer too... Eli can only stay up 1hr and 20 minutes at a time usually...

@rubies- Eli woke up from his nap of 1.5hrs at 4:45pm yesterday... i made a mistake of putting him to bed at 6:30pm.. he cried and cried and wouldn't sleep until 8! Tonight.. I will try a 6pm bedtime :( hopefully he will sleep!

on a better note... he sleep through the night from 8pm all the way till 6:40am w/o feeding!

I hope your LO sleeps better and earlier tonight too :)

We have a 4 month old who was sleeping in our arms for naps and the first part of the night. We just couldnt handle it anymore. He got so upset as soon as we put him down and it was obvious he was getting so used to our arms. We are now on night 5 of his baby sleep boot camp (dont have the heart to call it CIO). We have not left him crying for more than 5 minutes on his own. I have been able to put him down for naps on his own this week (and he actually naps...for most of the naps). However, we are still working on the night time sleep and we only see slight improvements. I have been bawling my eyes out tho....it has been tough but he needs his sleep and he sleeps much better when he self soothes we notice. Anyone else in baby sleep boot camp mode?

@reggie - my daughter was never the best napper but i never nap trained her either, which i kind of regret now since she stopped napping altogether at 15 months! so my advice would be to do some sort of nap training so that hopefully you can have both great day and night sleep. it is really not easy to have a toddler that doesn't nap at all so i would nip that in the bud lest you end up like me!!

@Reggie: So, the problem is that the SECOND she starts fussing, I scoop her up. I have NEVER let her full-out cry. And that's my fault...Everytime I hear her begin to fuss, I get worked up and feel the need to rescue her. Up until 4-5 nights ago, she would wake up twice in the night and both times I would change her and then feed her. But since the nights of horror began, I would change/feed her for the first wake-up and every one after that (the hourly, hellish ones) I would just pick her up and rock her, and sometimes try to get her to sleep in my arms while I lie in bed. The hubs and I have talking about what we should do and we've come to two conclusions:
1) Get her her mattress for the crib and kick her out of our room and into her own room so that if/when we hear her fuss/cry, we won't jump up in a second to get her
2) Let her fuss/cry

She just turned 3 months and we fully intend to really sleep-train her at 4 months. I have no qualms about the CIO-method within reason and I'm thinking that tonight we're going to let her cry a little bit before tending to her.

SIGH!

@andrea- he has always been a catnapper... then something happened when he reached 10 weeks old... for the past 2 weeks or so he has been able to sleep longer than 30 - 40 min at a time during the day.. so I'm soooo afraid of waking him up! lol he can only stay up for 1.5hrs at a time so if he only sleep 30 minutes at a time.. by the time early evening comes, he would just wail from being overtired :( but yes i agree- the 3 hr naps are just weird... some days though, he seems extra sleepy.. i do consider myself lucky though because he has always been sleeping well at night (knock on wood)... almost always 11-12hrs of nighttime sleep... just short inconsistent naps during the daytime...

@rubies- what happens when she wakes up at night? do you feed her a bottle? rock her? we try to use minimal contact at night... Eli used to wake up a few times at night but we would just change his diaper and he would go back to sleep. nowadays he just wakes up once early morning (between 4 - 5am) for a bottle... also.. do you let her cry at all? we let Eli fuss for a bit until he is definitely crying for us... maybe if she is full, dry, and just sleepy... try letting her fuss/cry a bit longer than usual... she may just go back to sleep on her own

ok, then i would try to limit his napping during the day so that he is tired enough to go to bed by 7 pm. i would say 3 hrs of daytime naps plus 12 hours of night time sleep gets him to the recommended 15 hours.

and yes, my daughter did wake up at 5 am when she had the 6 pm bedtime but i had no choice as that was the best bedtime for her at that time. it didn't take too long before i could get her to stay up until 7 pm and then she woke up at 6 am and then eventually 7 am.

@Tina- I would loooove nap consolidation! His naps are inconsistent. Yesterday, he had 3 naps. his first nap was almost 3 hours.. then an hour.. then 30 minutes.. he woke up at around 4:20pm so I just let him stay up until his bedtime routine at 6... but he fell asleep at 6:30 when drinking his bottle.. alll the way till 7pm.. then after burping him.. he was wide awake at 7:15pm... fuss/cried till he fell asleep at 8pm :(

Today though... He only slept an hour and half for his first morning nap and then he catnapped all day... ranging from 20 - 40 minutes... now hes down for his 4th nap.. its been almost an hour.... so hopefully it'll last longer...

I've been wanting to sleep train him... for his morning naps. he goes down fine. I just swaddle him, turn on white noise, then he falls asleep on his own after a few minutes in his crib.. but then toward the end of the day, I almost always have to scrap his last nap :( because he would just wail and I'm afraid to go back to the bad habits of rocking him.. I'm gonna look into that book... I need him to sleep well before week 15! I'll be going back to work and my mother in law will take over... I want to be able to tell her a schedule she can follow...

he's probably getting enough rest with his lengthening night sleep, which is why he's not tired at bedtime... have you considered nap consolidating? Now that he's moving towards sleeping through the night, you might want to consider moving towards 3 scheduled naps a day (or 4? not sure where he is now). Hi Reggie!! ;) Have you read "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child"? That book drove me crazy but it worked for us!! You can just refer to the sections that refer to his current age.

@Reggie: For the last few nights, she's been getting a 3-4hr stretch of sleep (ie. 9-midnight, 9-1am, something like that) and then she wakes up every. single. hour. I'm not even kidding. I wish this were a giant joke but it isn't. Suffice to say that I'm about to rip my hair out. I can't figure out, really, what the problem is other than our bedtime being too late. But she's had this bedtime since forever!

If I attempt to give her a 6 or 7pm bedtime then I have to get the hubs on board because that's the time he gets home from work and of course he wants to play with LO.
@andrea- Eli's bedtime has been changing from 6pm to 630 and then to 7 and then to 8.. haha. It's probably because he is so young so nothing is set in stone. but I'm going to try earlier bedtime tonight and see if it works! my only concern is that nowadays he sleeps from 8pm - 7am... if I put him down at 6pm... what if he wakes at 5 and wants to play? lol

I remember having this problem when my daughter was younger. She would fight getting put to sleep at 7 pm so I tried 6 pm and that totally worked. So yes, perhaps try the earlier bedtime. And I always stuck to the same bedtime so I would not let her last nap run too late. I always woke her up.

GeekinHeels had an awesome sleep time chart based on age. I have it on my fridge and refer to it regularly. One of the items on it is the time to end the last nap so as not to disturb night time sleep.
I don't have it in soft copy any more, unfortunately.

@Reggie: After her morning nap, which ends usually around 11:30am, she'll be awake for 1.5-2hrs before it's very clear she needs to nap again. And like your LO, when my LO wakes up from her last nap (anywhere between 4-6pm), she doesn't want to sleep again EVER, which is why her bedtime is around 8pm but she really doesn't fall asleep until 9-10pm.

I am starting to think that babies this age like to be up longer in the evenings...I think maybe because the hubs gets home and there is another voice in the house other than mine that interests her.

I'm starting to go nuts because she is not sleeping well at night. Grrr.

@rubies- how long does your LO stay awake during the day and in the early evening? during the day Eli can only stay awake for 1.5hrs max... but i notice that after waking up at 4:30 from his nap... he doesn't go down for another nap at 6pm! that's why I try to just do his bedtime routine... but then he ends up sleeping at the bottle at 6:30pm :( I was wondering if babies at this age can stay awake for longer in the early evening?

thanks ladies! i'll see what happens with his last nap today... he is a great sleeper once he is down for the night.. last night, he slept from 8pm all the way till 5am! Just that I want to time his bedtime right so he can go down with minimal fussing...

I'm really bad at putting down my LO at a set time. I usually judge by the time he woke up from his last nap. This week he dropped his 3rd nap, and I had to move up his usual 8ish bedtime up to 7. The good thing is that he still wakes up at 8am even though he goes to bed earlier.

oh, forgot to address the nap part. Liv will always take a nap starting between 5 and 5:30 (shes a cat napper, never naps for more than 45 minutes) and she still goes right to bed. Any later than that and I dont let her nap. I keep her cranky butt up for the extra 30 minutes until shes out for the night. Usually no longer than that though

I had issues like this too, and my stepmom told me to try moving her bedtime up. ITs an enigma....put her down earlier she sleeps later. Put her down later, she barely sleeps lol. I was putting her down around 8 or 9, and I bumped it to 7:30. Within a week she was sleeping straight through until 2 or 3, then going right back down until 6-7am. If they get overtired, they dont sleep as well and wake up constantly. There are some nights Liv is SO exhausted she falls asleep at 6:45 or 7, and she still keeps her schedule (albeit moved an hour up. Those nights she wakes at 2am, then sleeps till 6.) Worth a shot to try to put them down a bit earlier.
