We didn't have LO and MIL visit until a day later. They were probably there for about an hour and that was plenty of time. My LO was a little hyper and touching everything so I was excited to see him but it was challenging to chase him around in the hospital room.

An hour will be plenty! I had a super easy induction and when they brought DD1, they stayed about 15 minutes, took her to the cafeteria to get dinner and came back up for another 15-20 minutes. I was beyond ready for them to leave.

So we have a plan, sort of. Turns out that FIL is in town Thurs and he could take DD home if we wanted more time. I also had my DH try to explain to his mom that we could be bumped and it would be late or I may not be feeling up for visitors as much as I want DD to meet her baby sis. And he's prepared to call his mom and tell her to hold off until Fri morning. Although she did say, "come hell or high water that I will be bringing DD to meet the baby Thurs." Sooooo, we'll see about that, haha. I don't think MIL understands all the various things that could affect the plans.

I had my older daughter come the next day with my mom. DH and I really wanted some quiet time to bond with the new baby and make sure that I was rested and cleaned up after labor. Having a "magic hour" of skin to skin and breastfeeding, having me sewn up after a huge tear, weighing and checking baby, etc. took quite a long time (maybe 3 hours) and then we moved to the recovery room. DD came in the morning, brought us breakfast, and stayed for about an hour after we ate- she cuddled baby, snapped a few pics, and then left.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: I had my baby girl two weeks ago and had DS come for about an hour maybe an hour and a half. His grandparents were there so it made it an easy visit for everyone.

I was desperate to see him so if you're anything like me, why not have DH leave to go get big sister or have your MIL drop her off before having to pick anyone up and have DH take her back home?

I had a repeat c section a couple weeks ago and I was excited to see my son afterwards but definitely needed some time to recover first. He came to see us each day at the hospital but his attention span for our visits was short! I'd say less than an hour is perfect.

@snowjewelz: haha, yeah probably!

@gingerbebe: unfortunately, MIL will be watching all the kids until my SIL gets home after 7pm or something. So that's pretty much bedtime for DD. I really hope I don't get pushed back! I feel like 1130 is already long enough for fasting, I'll be so hungry if I get bumped! But that's a good point that it's definitely a possibility.

@ShootingStar: @JMOM: I'm going to talk about that with DH tonight. I'm not sure how set he is on DD coming to visit the same day. It just seems like it'll be stressful for my MIL and trying to juggle all the schedules.

My repeat c-section got pushed from 9ish to 1 due to other emergency c-sections. I would go with Gingerbebe's suggestion of planning for Friday morning and then you won't feel stressed if it they don't get to come Thursday.

I would just do it the next day. I had a repeat c first thing in the morning and we didn't have anyone visit that first day. We did Facetime with DS that evening after my parents picked him up from daycare though. It was nice to be able to spend the day concentrating on the baby. And even with a repeat c, the baby had some distress and it took a while to get back to the recovery room.

Can you do something later in the evening after the SIL's kids are picked up? When I had my RCS, I got bumped twice because 2 other emergency c-sections were needed and my 630am surgery became a 1pm surgery (I was soooo hungry). I wasn't in my hospital room until 330pm and originally my mom was supposed to show up with DS1 at 1030am!

I might push for everyone to come Friday morning and use the possibility of your surgery getting pushed as the reason and then if everything goes to plan and your MIL wants to stop by before picking up the other kids, fine.

@youboots: well, rush hour lasts from about 330/4-7pm here. It's bananas. The daycare is actually on the way to my house and SIL's house. We live really close together, just far outside the city and the hospital is centrally located. The more I think about it, it probably will have to be a short visit. I don't think MIL will want to wait to meet the baby until the next day anyway. I was just hoping we'd not have to be confined to a schedule and we could decide how long or short we wanted the visit to be. It's just unfortunate that both my SIL and us need child care on the same day! Ugh

DS was just a few months away from turning 5 when we had our second. The first visit was very short, maybe 30 minutes or so. The baby had just had a bath and needed skin to skin so I couldn't really do anything. Plus my older one was kind of freaked out since I still had the IV port in. The next day he stayed longer and it was a better visit since I could let him get up on the bed.

Personally I'd just wait till Friday if it's easier, logistically, for everyone. Esp since you don't know how you'll be feeling, and maybe it's nice to just spend some time by yourself and with the baby too.

DD1 never came to the hospital after I gave birth; we were debating and it ended up that DD2 had to stay in NICU so there was no point of her coming. I gave birth Tue night and they got to meet Thurs afternoon when we went home.

So I'm having a repeat csec this Thurs and my MIL is coming to take care of DD while we're in the hospital. There's a little bit of an issue with timing though. My surgery is scheduled for 1130, my Dr said I'd be in recovery for a couple hours and suggested that DD visit at 3pm. The issue is that my MIL also needs to pick up her other grandkids from daycare that day (at 430) for my Sis in law because she has a late conference. The traffic in my city is awful and can easily be an hour from the hospital we'll be at and the daycare. I guess my question is how long was the first visit with big siblings at the hospital? I feel like an hour (at most) isn't long enough and we'll all feel rushed and won't be able to enjoy our time together as a family. Should I tell my MIL to wait until first thing Friday morning?
