@Mae: It's hard when they're so freaking adorable, isn't it. If you're not concerned, then I'd definitely wait till Sunday! You need to focus 100% on this if it's going to work and sounds like there's a lot going on from now until then (shots, baby shower, etc). Good luck.

@Mae: I actually don't think the shots matter, but if you want to do naps at the same time and you are hosting a baby shower then I would probably wait until Sunday.

@BabyTsMom: lol I'm the one least concerned with my sleep. I think I'm running on adrenaline and hormones and coffee. And I made brownies a few days ago. Those help. :)

And to add some cute. Here is the tiny tyrant in action right this minute

I can relate to your dilemma! While I am inclined to say that I would wait until Sunday night so that you're sure that she's not in pain or sick, etc (and I highlym highly doubt holding her for a few more nights is going to make it harder to train her), I can also get that you may not be able to Wait that long. I had been planning to train my lo when he turned 4 months but one night when he was 3.5 months old, I just couldn't take it anymore so that's when we started training him. So I get it. No real advice but I do understand. Plus you really have to take into account how tired you are. You're not a martyr- mama needs to be rested to be a good mama!

@lilyann: sound macine yes blackout curtains no. Although lo's room is north facing and we have wood blinds and regular curtains so it is dim.

@erind425: she won't sleep on dh. Screams worse than if left alone if anyone other than me tried to rock her.

@My Only Sunshine: fingers crossed it is the same for us!

@Mrs. Champagne: no Tylenol before last time, just after and it only helped a little. Going to give her Motrin before this time. Fingers crossed it helps her feel ok!

If you want to wait until Sunday, wait until Sunday. Three days isn't going to change anything, I swear!

Just to give you some hope, I was super nervous about sleep training and ended up starting it right before my husband went on a week long business trip because I just could. not. take. it. for one more night. I thought it was terrible timing but it helped her sleep within two nights and made my week by myself with her so much better.

I would wait until after the shots just in case she has a reaction. My LO was fine all day after his 2-month shots until he randomly spiked a fever in the middle of the night, so if it were me I would want to be able to differentiate between the crying due to a potential shot reaction and the crying due to sleep training. Is it possible that this weekend your husband can do some of the holding to sleep if necessary so you can catch up a little? Maybe a shift approach just so you're somewhat better rested as you start sleep training?

@Mae: Are you using a sound machine? Blackout curtains? I am so sorry you are going through this. I know for me, I am a better mama to my boys when I get sleep, so I believe in sleep training sooner than later. You will get through this though! DS#2 is 5.5 months and is turning into a great sleeper just like his big bro. I just have to be really mindful of his sleep cues, otherwise I have a screaming baby on my hands.

@looch: This. It's not as though a few extra nights will create a worse habit.

I would never attempt sleep training the night after shots. No way. The fact is, side effects can and do happen and I would want to be able to differentiate from crying from sleep training vs crying from a side effect. It may be a small risk but to me as a parent I want to be able to monitor after all of those shots and I wouldn't change the routine after an already tough, abnormal day for my LO.

That's just me, though!

I would wait. Just want to tell you that I'm going through the same thing with my daughter, who just turned 5 months. She sleeps well through the night but has to be held for naps. I tried CIO with checks when she was 4 1/2 months but it was horrible. My husband is on vacation the week after Christmas so we are going to tackle it then. Good luck to you!

Now! After shots it could be teeth, or a cold, etc.

Also did you do tylenol before and after shots last time? We didn't for the two month ones and they were a disaster. We've done it since and he's been totally fine! At 4 months we did tylenol before, 4 hours later when he was grumpy and then before bed. Then he was totally fine.

Good luck!

@Mae: first of all- you must be so, so exhausted :( I'm so sorry you've been having these sleep probs. I would wait until after her shots. My LO usually took her shots like a champ but there was one time she def didn't feel good. For your own peace of mind, I would want to make sure she is in normal condition and doesn't need anything.

Good luck!!!

@Mae: I really believe with sleep training the single most important thing is consistency. More than any method, or checks, or shots, or age, etc. That said, your current sleep situation is at a level that I don't think I could personally sustain for an additional 3 nights. So, whatever feels right to you, I think it's about survival. Good luck!

@Little Misters Mom: I Know all the research about CIO not creating serial killers and whatnot but my emotional self is all "omg i'm abandoning my baby when all she wants is her mom and that is a perfectly reasonable desire for a 6 month old and i'm horrible for depriving her of comfort for my own sleep needs".... so even though i'm getting on board with this whole thing i feel like knowing or suspecting she doesn't feel well tomorrow will lesson my already shaky resolve to follow through :/

@lilyann: not much. Yesterday my husband stayed home from work so I could nap while he watched LO so I got about 3-4 broken hours. Last night I gave up and coslept with her for the first time bc I was exhausted and I got about 4.5 broken hours. I expect tonight will be about the same. Saturday morning I can nap while DH watches LO>

I agree that from a sleep training perspective sooner is better. BUT... the only way I could handle the crying was by being 1000% sure that he wasn't hungry or in pain, he was just annoyed. The one night he didn't really tank up nursing, I got in my head about maaaaybe he was a little hungry and so I was starving him and needed to go nurse, I gave in and put us right back to square one. So I think I would wait until I felt very confident that he was ok. That isn't to say there is actually any problem doing it post-shots. Tylenol works great and really, honestly she is fine. It's just about your own peace of mind.

So LO is 6 months today and her sleep has been getting pretty much progressively worse, with brief respites of better before going back to worse, since about 3 months old. Just before 5 months we tried Ferber and she cried so hard she puked and I gave in and that was that.

We did do some light sleep training at 5 months, wherein we would put her down drowsy for bed (not naps) and every time she spit her paci out we'd run up and put it back in, and almost every night for the past month she'd fall asleep in 10-25 min with no crying. If she cried I picked her up and rocked her, but that only happened maybe 4 times in the past month and generally only if she'd had a really bad nap day.

At this point she requires me to hold her for every nap. Rock to sleep and if I set her down she wakes up within 10 min and nap is over. I was sort of okay waiting that out for a bit but now she seems to have figured out she can make the same demand at night. The last 2 nights she basically has not let me set her down. Three nights ago she went to bed with no fuss and 0 checks to replace paci, and only woke up twice all night and just needed paci replaced. Last 2 nights? Bedlam. Screams until I rock her to sleep then if i set her down she wakes up and cries.

I am tired.

So it is time for sleep training.

Problem is timing sucks because she has 6 month shots tomorrow (and she had a baaad time after 4 month shots, cried all day which is very odd for her) and I'm hosting a baby shower at our home on Sunday.

I want to wait to start sleep training and do both night and naps at the same time starting Sunday night. I don't want to make her CIO tomorrow when she isn't feeling good from shots, and I don't want to be dealing with an overtired cranky baby and deal with her screaming during a several-hours-long baby shower in my house.

But several people including my mom say I need to just start tonight because every single night I hold her to sleep it will make training worse. Ugh. Stupid bad timing.

WWYD?
