This happened to us once, and we talked to the nurse who said as a one time thing, it probably wasn't serious. Baby was about 4 months old and had gone a whole day without pooping, so the nurse said this was straining. She said to call back if this happened again, but it didn't. Probably normal!

I agree it sounds like a tear. But I would watch very closely and if you see it again (or if M has other symptoms like fussiness, gassiness, excessive spit up) I would talk to your doctor about possible food intolerances. But even if it is MSPI, it's not a medical emergency.

@Bao: @Ginabean3: Thanks, y'all :) That's what I am thinking, too. I knew she was going to the bathroom cause I could hear her straining, so that would make sense.

I went through this. I could talk about it for days. We collected stool samples and had them tested, had bloodwork done, eliminated dairy from my diet, it was a huge stressful ordeal that really ended up being nothing/unexplained. He grew out of it is the short story.

One theory (from our lactation consultant because we were having breastfeeding issues at the same time), was that stool softeners I was taking were the cause.

@Bao: I agree with you. We just went to the Ped office today for a well baby and our Ped brought it up. He noticed a tiny little tear from straining and he said if we ever see blood in her stool to check for a tear first. It's really common.

@lawbee11: it really does sound like it's from a little tear.

@Bao: There is an after hours number but I've never had to call it. Her pediatrician's website says, "This service should not be used for non-urgent medical questions." Not sure how urgent this is?

@luckypenny: I think the outside. It was sitting on top (not sure if that makes sense). It was not dark--more bright red. I just happened to catch it out of the corner of my eye. If DH were changing her he probably wouldn't have noticed it.

We had MSPI and this is common. You can read my MSPI post for information about what other things it might be before leaping right to that :)

Is is actually in the stool or just on the outside of it? DD has had some in her diaper/outside of the stool before because she had to strain and caused a little tear :(

I think blood IN the stool is dark red and blood otherwise is bright red? I could totally be making that up though....

A had this before and it was because she had to strain to go, however hers was a little on her bum too. Is there an after hours number you can call just to ease your mind, if you are worried? Maybe just talk to a nurse?

I just changed M's dirty diaper and there were a few small streaks of blood in it (at least I assume it was blood, I don't know what else could be in her diaper that's red). She doesn't have a fever and is otherwise her happy, smiley self. Is a tiny amount of blood in a baby's diaper ever normal? Like maybe from straining to go to the bathroom? When I wiped there wasn't any blood on the wipe. Her ped's office is already closed for the day.

Has anyone experienced something similar?
