good to know! i'm not at the 6 month mark yet, so i'll have to use all my milk before i start weaning into food (i think), but at 6 months, i'll start with smaller bags!

@highwire: yeah - I'm going to start offering milk with dinner and will put the leftover breastmilk into those cups. I hate seeing it go to waste!!

@Weagle: Highwire just had a good point. Put the remainder of the milk into a cup with dinner. At least offering it will make us feel better, right? :)

@mediagirl: Can you give her some of the breastmilk at home? Send some of the 5oz bag to daycare and give her the rest that evening?

Thank you so much for posting this! I just got into a HUGE argument with Hubs about this because I WAS saving it all in 2oz increments and he thought that was a waste of time and that I should be doing 5oz increments! I never thought about using it for weaning/switching to cow's milk, so I'm so happy you made this point!

BTW if it still smells OK and the kid will drink it, you can go more than 24 hours. To not waste. Nancy from Isis just tweeted about this the other day (I know you know who I'm talking about :)

Yes! I've been putting out to thaw before I go to bed, and pouring out an ounce or so as I need it during the day. I'm still wasting a ton :(

Freeze some of your milk in small increments for when you plan to wean. I only have 5oz bags in my freezer and didn't consider what it would be like when I started mixing her milk with whole milk.

I'm sending 4oz of breastmilk to daycare now, mixed with 4oz of whole milk. Next week, the oz will be even less. My problem? Defrosted milk only lasts 24 hours in the fridge. So, I'm wasting a ton of milk. It's so sad. :-( Had I planned better, I could have sent breastmilk for a longer period of time. Sad.

Learn from my mistakes!
