I wouldn't tip either. To me tipping is for when somene goes above and beyond and actually deserves it.

@erinbaderin: agree with others that it would be crazy to tip this person, but just wanted to say re holiday tipping when you don't have a relationship established--we started my son at daycare 3 days a week in early December when he was 3 months old, back in 2016. I didn't give the care workers a holiday tip that year--they had literally watched him like 7 times and I barely knew them. The next year we had a relationship and they were terrific and I gave them all really generous tips, and did it again a few months later when we moved towns and had to leave. I think it's weird to give someone a tip when you don't have a good rapport.

I would not tip in this case. I’ve had a once a week cleaning team 2 people for 1-2 hours a week and combined I’m tipping a little over what 2 cleans is. Next year I’ll do double.

@Mrs. Carrot: thanks for confirming! When I came home I was so disappointed

@erinbaderin: 85 is still a great price! And at leas you know how great your first cleaner is!

@gotkimchi: No, $100 is the money I’m saving in a tip - I pay $85. It was originally 2 people for 1.5 hours but now it’s more like one person for 2 hours.

@gotkimchi: That's definitely nuts. I'm in DC, so everything is more expensive here, and I pay $110 for 2-3 hours and 2 people, which includes vacuuming, washing floors, dusting, baseboards, etc. of 2 full bathrooms, 2 full bedrooms, kitchen (wash countertops, microwave and stovetop, in addition to floors), 2 walk-in closets and living room (includes vacuuming furniture and dusting, as well as washing the floors) and trash removal.

@erinbaderin: it’s $50 each time to clean? My bad cleaners yesterday who I ended up getting my money back was $160 (that’s common in my area) and sent 2 people for 2 hours. This is what was completed-

2.5 bathrooms (no floors)
Master bedroom dust and vacuum
Kitchen sink and stove.

That’s it. No counter tops, not my dining table, no floors, didn’t vacuum the kids rooms. I mean for 2 people for 2 hours thats nuts right??? And the things they “cleaned” were even well done

This is GREAT news, an extra $100 for me!

Re: finding a new cleaner - I’m giving her one more chance. I just really like my original cleaning lady and I don’t want to fire her, especially when she has a new baby, but if this next one isn’t good I think I am going to have to find somebody else at least until she comes back from maternity leave.

Same. I generally only tip someone (in these sort of positions, cleaner, babysitter, nanny), if we have a longer standing relationship and they’ve done good work. I don’t think cleaning your place 3x, poorly, should equate to you tipping her.

I wouldn't tip either. I tip our cleaner because she does great work that I'm happy with and because I like her as a person and wish her a very happy holiday season. You don't know your new cleaner and aren't pleased with her work. I'd also probably find a new cleaner unless your first cleaner is planning to come back.

I wouldn't tip. To me tipping for Christmas is for someone who's been cleaning for you for at least a few months and who does a good job. I wouldn't tip for 2 ok cleans and one that was awful

So we’ve had the same cleaner for the last few years - she comes every other week, and usually at Christmas I pay her double her rate as a tip. She got pregnant, and started training somebody to take over for her. They cleaned together for a few months, and then second cleaner took over full time in the summer. So far so good. Except then second cleaner gave notice and third cleaner was hired - they did it together for one week as “training” and then third cleaner took over full time. The first time her job was ok, the second time it was TERRIBLE - like, I questioned if she’d even come. I emailed the original cleaner to complain and she sent her back to re-do it the next day, and the job was adequate, not great. There is one more cleaning before she’s off for Christmas. So my (very long winded) question is how do I tip somebody who has cleaned my house three times, one time really really badly? And I won’t even know if she did a better job this next time before I tip.
