I would switch salons if I were you lol! Just kidding. If you've been tipping it might be super awkward to suddenly stop. You could always try explaining it to her the first time you stop and see how she takes it. Say something like "I'm not going to leave a tip but it's only because you own the business not because I'm unhappy!" Hopefully she is graceful in her response but if not you can always maybe compromise and leave a smaller tip.

I usually tip the assistant a few dollars and give my stylist 20% unless the assistant ends up doing most of the work, then I'll split the tip more evenly.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Agreed. I don't think you really need to tip your stylist if she's the owner. She's already getting all the profit.

I tip the assisstant a couple- few dollars.

You really don't need to tip the owner. How about gradually rolling back your tip? Next visit give her 18% then 15% then 12% and stop at 5% or 10% if you feel you must tip her something.

As a previous assistant to an owner of a salon she never split tips with me. She would only give me a tip if the guest specifically said it was for me. It was always nice getting tips because we were paid at min-wage but not expected.

I roll my tip into my credit/debit card charge when I'm done. If there is an assistant (sometimes yes, sometimes no) I assume they do like a restaurant and share the tips.

My hair costs $140 per visit. I tip my stylist $20 and the assistant $5...the assistant washes my hair and assists my stylist when she applies my color (preps the color and hands her foils).

I would love to know the popular opinion on this topic.

I started going to my hairstylist when she worked at a regular salon. I always gave her 20% tip. A few years ago she opened her own salon but I continued giving her 20% tip because I felt weird about not giving her tip all of a sudden (even though I know you don't have to tip if she is the owner) plus she's amazing. This brings my total from $200 to $240 so it's a significant amount of money.

In the past she worked without an assistant but recently she hired an assistant who does the shampooing. That's pretty much all the client interaction the assistant has (I think she put the color block around my hairline as well).

Do I have to now also tip the assistant? At previous salons I'd leave a few dollars for the assistant and 20% for the stylist but it was never the owner. Can I expert my stylist to tip out her assistant?
