@katsupgirl: Good point - I never thought about the number of orders. I know weekend deliveries are only 8:30 am to 2 pm.

@LindsayInNY: I would up it to $5 if it was really heavy stuff. The other thing you could consider is how many deliveries they make a day. If they make like 50 a day and half of the people tip $3 that's an extra $75 per day.

We use FreshDirect sometimes and usually tip $3-5. We live in an elevator building, I would probably tip at least $5 for a fourth floor walk up, but any tip you provide is nice, especially since they tell you tipping is not required.

I usually tip about $5 per order. I love Peapod. It's become our go to grocery shopping tool lately with both of us working. I have an order set for tomorrow. DH gets to wait for it while LO and I go have pie with some other neighborhood moms.

@MamaMagpie: I didn't think about that at first until DH mentioned the cash going right into his pocket and not filtering through his employer. I might stop including it and just pay it separately... I do love it!! I have my weekends back - they're not spent grocery shopping and doing laundry (we send that out most of the time too, LOL)!

@LindsayInNY: yah, I just always liked knowing it really went directly to the guy bringing us our stuff! I guess I was worried if I did it the other way it might go into some tip-sharing pool or something and I felt bad about that for some silly reason. PS don't you LOVE grocery delivery?! Best.idea.ever.

Okay, in case this helps... We have a case at work where the person is/was employed by Fresh Direct. They're assigned in teams of two for deliveries - I don't know if one drives, one carries or what. This guy carried the groceries to homes/apartments and was paid $8.25 and then $8.50 per hour. I guess that makes me feel a little better since it's not like they're making $5/hour but at the same time they're not making $15/hour either...

@MamaMagpie: I debated that... If I include it, I wonder if the driver/delivery person knows the amount before they deliver which is kinda awkward. If I don't include it, they don't have to report it and won't know how much it is until AFTER delivery. I had 60 days free delivery with PeaPod - going to try FreshDirect next I think?

@katsupgirl: I think I order a normal amount. I would give more if there were a ton of heavy items or a really large order though.

Um... we had a whole bunch of groceries delivered last week and I forgot to tip. I meant to, I had the cash in my pocket, and totally forgot. I think I was going to do like, $5-10? It was about $150 worth of groceries, including some drinks, but DH also happened to meet him downstairs and helped carry stuff up.

ETA: We are pretty much on the 3rd floor so we accounted for that. If it wasn't too flights of stairs, or we had an elevator, I'd probably stay under $5, I guess.

I haven't ordered from fresh direct lately but i think 2-3 dollars is enough. When we get delivery from our supermarket that's how much we tip. The guy only pushes the cart about a block and a half.

When we lived there and used Fresh Direct (I miss it so!) I would try to tip the actual delivery person like $5, vs including it in the checkout. But I think either way, $3-$5 is nice to do!

I order groceries through Pea Pod and/or Fresh Direct. There's a payment option where you can include a tip. For those of you who use/have used this service, do you tip? If so, how much? I polled Twitter but only got two responses (fail!). Someone said they don't and the other person said a couple dollars.

I usually spend $100ish every 2 weeks. I live on a fourth floor walk up (they only make one trip to bring everything up). Very rarely does the order include heavy items - out of the past 3 orders, I ordered a case of water once, usually 1-2 2 liters of soda each order, but that's really it. I've been tipping $2-3 but don't know if that's not enough or what.
