When we need DS to drink, we go for novel stuff he's never had before, even if it's totally unhealthy. We've done chocolate milk, popsicles and gatorade. My mom suggested orange soda when we were potty training, apparently it worked to get me to drink :silly: .

@Autumnmama79: haha I've definitely randomly forced a few mL into her through the day! The nice part is it doesn't go IN her mouth so I don't have to fear hurting her sores but she's forced to swallow the water. :P

@Autumnmama79: @SleepyMonkey: @Mrs. Lion: thanks for the syringe trick! Got her to drink 15 mL (aka 3 tsp) of water this morning. Of course she refused when I went to try again later on. :P

@SleepyMonkey: I suspected HFM Tuesday night. She went to the ped Wednesday afternoon and they didn't see any sores. Took her back today and the ped saw sores in her mouth. Yesterday she was inconsolable, even on meds, so that was definitely the worst of it. She seems to be on the mend now. Today is much better than yesterday!

What is she sick with? Does she have a high fever? The only time my ds1 was so sick she refused fluids was when she had a uti and I should have just taken her to the ER.

@Mrs. Lion: no problems with medicine via the syringe! Will be trying that tomorrow if she continues to refuse liquids. Applesauce in a pouch is usually a love but she only ate like 4 ounce through the course of the whole day :/

@regberadaisy: how is she with taking medicine via syringe? We were on the verge of an IV and had some luck with pedialite via syringe. It was novel enough that she was willing to try it...she refused every other bottle/cup and fluid we tried. Also, maybe applesauce pouches?

@Foodnerd81: ok - good one. Will try that tomorrow! The hard part is getting her to open her mouth and drink some! :P

@Mama Bird: that worked yesterday a few times! That always works on DD1. :)

Maybe a water bottle? My oldest was a bad drinker at that age even when healthy, but he'd drink out of those any day. Maybe it was the novelty...

ugh, that is the worst! Total commiseration because my LO is horrid about drinking when she doesn't feel well. It can be really scary, we've gone up to 12 hours without a wet diaper before. (Technically you're supposed to take in at 8 hours for hydration but I was having some success getting liquids in her towards the end of the day and I didn't want to put her through an IV).

Anyways. I feel like some kids just are going to be bad about this and what has helped me most is to have lowered expectations. I know at the toddler age going 8-12 hours without a diaper is not good but also not going to cause permanent damage if it is only for a day. Being calmer about it seems to help both of us (personally I think I tend to get annoying to her pushing the water so much lol).

The best luck we have though convincing her to drink is via food. If I give her crackers, freeze dried fruit, raisins, or peanut butter she tends to want to drink more to wash them down. And if it is not a stomach bug we will feed her spicy food because she likes it and that always makes her want to drink.

My son had a nasty virus and went on strike from all food and liquids for like two days until we gave him a straw cup full of white Gatorade on ice (it's called like Glacier Cherry Frost or something). He ended up drinking the whole bottle during that day and between that and McDonalds Fries he was like Lazarus resurrected the next day.

What are some of your best tricks to get a sick LO to drink fluids?

Dd2 has been sick and in teething H-E-L-L since Wednesday. She's barely drink 6 oz of liquid a day and that includes fruits and applesauce.

I've tried different cups, open cups, straw cups with hard straws and soft straws, room temp and ice cold water, ice cubes, milk, juice, pedialyte, Popsicles and soup. I offer at least every half hour and most times she says no. Sometimes she will drink it, but only take a sip.

So far we've been getting 2-3 wet diapers a day, so we're not in dehydration territory, yet. But I'm afraid if it continues.

Any other tricks that worked for you that I haven't tried yet?

She's only 19m so can't be reasoned with like my almost 4 yo.
