Ever since I started using Emla cream on my 3 year old's arm an hour before her shots, they have become no big deal at all (she cries for like 1 minute as the needle approaches and just after). I don't think she feels them at all! I can't recommend it enough.

So, we have not had success and the last time we went for flu shots, there was an older boy that went before us and he literally started yelling at the top of his lungs and it freaked my son out, so I took him outside.

He seemed okay until we got in and then all hell broke loose with him and my husband literally had to hold him down. It was terrible, and we had even tried talking about it before and everything, but he still went nuts.

The kids survived. They actually did great. We did not have a repeat of the great flu shot incident of 2016. I feel bad but we didn't tell the kids, well DD really, what we was going to happen. I sat her on the table and before she knew it the two shots were done. She didn't even know she had two until I took the bandaids off at bathtime.

The whole outing wasn't without incident because an old lady went out of her way to drag her IV over to us and spew racist hatred (not directed at us but at all the other families in the waiting area). Ugh. WTF people.

For the anticipation we remind my 4yo that the shots give her superpowers so that she doesn't get sick. Silly, but she likes it.

@T.H.O.U.: We haven't talked about it at all. It wasn't on my radar until preschool mentioned it. So DH is going to pick her up early today and take her. I'll meet them at the doctor because DD needs shots too. I can't decide if not saying anything until we're there is smart or cruel.

Trying to help redirect focus of physical pain. Squeezing a parents hand or you rubbing or vibrating their leg or something (whatever is opposite of where the shot is going).

For my kids the less we talk about it and the more we just do it the better.

Our pediatrician had D take a deep breath then blow out when he gave the shot. It seemed to help redirect his focus, especially after the 1st one!

DD is due for her 4yo old shots. I think she has four coming today. If her flu shot was any indication we're in for an on the ground kicking and screaming tantrum. Any strategies for making it less traumatic?
