As for restrictions on what to bring from outside, I've packed 12 tamales in my carry on with no problems. My family has flown with boxes of baked goods (muffins, bear claws, danishes) in plastic bags. You should hopefully be able to get away with actually bringing meals going to Hawaii. You can save the buying food from the airport on the way home since Hawaii grocery stores are pretty pricey.

ETA: These were all through LAX airport security.

We are also flying to Hawaii with a toddler in March. We actually have two stops--not looking forward to that part.

Turns out we get free lounge access as a perk with our credit card, so we plan to eat the lounge food at one stop. Will probably pack fruit to bring and buy everything else at the airport before the long flight to Hawaii!

@Baby Boy Mom: that's what I'm afraid of, plus my priority is letting my toddler run off as much energy as humanly possible during those two hours.

I think we'll definitely pack breakfast, granola bars and fruit/veggies. My daughter recently discovered fruit snacks and keeps asking for them and my answer now is in the plane to Hawaii so apparently they are getting packed too!

For a flight I'd go with prepackaged stuff
Single serve PB/hummus cups
Those pre sliced apple baggies
Mini carrot baggies
Granola/lara/nutrigrain/kind bars
Pouches
Goldfish/pretzelfish/cookiefish
Fruit leather
Dry cereal
Fruit snacks/lollipops
String cheese
Crackers

And I'd try to grab pizza or sandwiches at the airport too and maybe a yogurt or fruit cup.

We had a super long flight recently so I packed a ton of food. Small insulated lunch box with apples, clementines, baby carrot , mini hummus and almond butter and jelly sandwiches. Then dry stuff: banana chips, Lara bars, mixed nuts, seaweed snacks, rice crackers, and probably something else I'm forgetting. I pack all our food in a separate tote bag with empty water bottles. Our plan was actually to eat at the airport but the lines were so long that we ended up not having time, so my food bag definitely saved the day.

We almost always eat at the airport (assuming there's enough time). It kills time and then we don't get on a flight hungry. Buy snacks or pack some snacks to tide you over.

OH also, MSP has water filling stations so you can bring a water bottle or buy a small one and refill it.

Oh yeah, DS likes carrot sticks and fresh fruit, so we always pack our own baby carrots and clean fruit like clementines, apple slices, and grapes.

Yeah agree with above, buy food at the airport. We pack up with a ton of baggie snack options (which double as entertainment if they're novel) and then try to fill her up with airport food, like a bagel with cream cheese and cup of milk etc.

MSP actually has a lot of great options - its also a huge airport in general - but I always found something to eat at French Meadow Bakery.

https://www.mspairport.com/eat-shop-relax-info.aspx?id=67

TSA allows you to bring toddler food (baby food, juice, pouches, etc) - you just have to declare them and have them separated in a bag and X-rayed. Just tell the agent at the checkpoint. You can throw in all sorts of pouches and snacks for your kids.

We usually buy a slice of cheese pizza or chicken nuggets in the terminal and serve it with a fruit and veggie pouch and milk. We bring lots of Ziploc bags when we travel and will bag up the leftover nuggets or pizza and take it on the plane for a second meal. If its morning time, we might get a smoothie and get the dairy/fruit in that way.

We pack calorie dense snacks for the adults like Kind bars - its really easy to run out of time to eat wrangling a toddler - and grab food for ourselves in the terminal as well. Usually one of us runs to grab hefty sandwiches or bagelwiches or something that will hold us a long time and a large bottle of water.

I agree with @yoursilverlining - buy some stuff on your layover. Also plan for extra snacks in case your daughter is feeling cranky or picky. We flew to St Lucia a few weeks ago and my son ate nothing but cookies, granola bars, and crackers on the flight. We brought various kinds of Bear Paws, goldfish, applesauce pouches, peanut butter Ritz sandwiches, and grapes. Personally I wouldn't worry about balanced or healthy meals, it's one day and a holiday.

@yoursilverlining: I'm definitely considering that option, I'm trying to look now into what the for options are like in Minneapolis. We've wound up stuck in podunk airports with awful options so many times that I'm worried about being stuck with only McDonald's.

Since your long flight is after a layover, I would just buy meal food at the airport in advance of the long flight. Ideally, I would eat a meal in the airport (or a filling snack at least) and then also buy sandwiches or some filling foods rather than trying to bring everything from the start.

We are flying to Hawaii this spring and it's 12+ hours of travel time. I'll be 5 months pregnant and my daughter will be 2.5. We have a quick flight from 8-10 and then a two hour layover in Minneapolis followed by an 8 hour flight to Honolulu. I'm feeling OK about the activities side of things, we're fortunate too that we will have her grandparents and two sets of aunts and uncles on the flight but I'm definitely open to brilliant ideas.

But what about food?! I think Delta serves one meal but I'm super picky, my husband has allergies and well, my daughter is a toddler. I figure with that time frame we need at least two meals and two decent snacks. Any ideas that will pack well with all the TSA bans?
