@Corduroy: walk fast, with a purpose? That probably depends on how good your coworkers are with social cues, though. I find that people always want to chat about my pregnancy (I'm 36 weeks), but if I go into the hall walking fast, holding something (like a folder), they generally leave me alone. If they start to talk, I just answer WHILE still walking.

Them: "how's it going? Any changes? Feel like it's getting close? Getting excited? blah blah"
Me: (still walking) "hanging in there!"

After a week it gets better. Now the only people that ask me are the ones that I talk to every day anyway.

Before you know it, no one will ask at all. You might even find yourself looking for opportunities to talk about your LO!

Eventually, things will get back to normal, and no one will ask. When I returned, it was all about what I was doing the last 4 years, but now, it's business as usual.

I'm 29 weeks and going to the bathroom went from a 5 minute process to 20-30 minutes because I keep getting stopped by everyone. And the problem is it's usually an emeregencydue to having a smaller bladder and it's also my busiest time of year at work and I'm trying to wrap things up so I'm more than swamped.

I've found what helps is having a few canned responses and keep walking as you're talking. If you slow down and completely face someone they take it as an invitation to keep the conversation going. If you keep heading in the direction you were going and blurt out an obviously canned (but polite) response they usually get the hint. If they don't, then just apologize and say you really need to go and will talk to them later.

Ok, I hope I'm just worried for nothing. What sparked my concern was attending a work baby shower. Five women swarmed me and started talk about how the were so glad they all took a year leave when they had babies and how you never get that time back. Thanks ladies, you know I'm going back at four months. And I thought other working moms would make me feel better.
Then there are the super inappropriate question askers. When I was pregnant one woman (in HR) asked me if I was going to let my husband taste my breastmilk. WTF? I guess my office just isn't very professional.

The first couple of days I could barely get from my desk to the pump room because I kept talking to people. Partly my fault cause I can keep a conversation going.

People mostly wanted to see pictures and didn't ask about any hot button topics. It only lasted the first couple of days.

I feel terrible about leaving my baby but talking about her and showing pictures made the day go faster.

When I returned to work I was more than happy to talk about LO because it brighten up my day. Though if I had to be somewhere I would politely excuse myself and say if they wanted to talk later to try at my desk.

It was a little hard for me to go back to work too... I did want to cry because I missed LO a lot while at work. One thing I did was send lots of pictures to my self and created an album on my work computer and clicked through pictures of LO when I needed a break at work. That really help me get through the day.

Some coworkers asked about daycare and leave but only coworkers that were having kids asked that. No one asked about sleep training at all. I think if I was asked about a topic I wasn't comfortable with I would just change the subject.

I've been following all the recent 'return to work' posts with great interest. I'm returning to work full time July 1st.

I'd love to hear any tips for shutting down hallways conversations and chatty co-workers. My main reasons:
1) no time to chat on my way to/from pumping
2) I'm afraid I'll cry when people repeatedly ask if I miss LO or feel guilty if I don't miss her enough
3) I don't want to be criticized for sleep training/daycare/leave etc.

At the end of my pregnancy every trip to the bathroom was a 30 minute affair because of all the stop and chats. I appreciate that my co-workers care about me but I'm afraid I'll never have time to get stuff done.

Can I wear a button that says "Please don't ask me about my LO"?

How do you get about your day?
