Hey I just want to update you guys on what I've been doing to wear DD in the winter months in Canada. In case this helps any other cold climate Bees!

I have a "make my belly fit" (makemybellyfit.com). None of the adapters would fit my coat's zipper, but they suggested to me the "DIY" adapter, which is just a zipper I had sewn in to the inside of the zipper that comes with my coat. Works like a charm! I could always remove the stitches for the second zipper when I am done with it (I plan on having many more babies, so probably won't be done for a while).

So now what I do is put on my sling and the "make my belly fit" before I leave the house and put LO in her car seat. I have one of those car seat blankets in it, so I dress her in warm clothing and a hat, but no coat. When we arrive at our destination I get out of the car and slip her in to the sling quickly right outside the door. Then I zip up the make my belly fit and she's as snug as a bug! I don't dress her too warmly because we're honestly only outside for a couple of minutes while we walk from the car to the door of the store, and DD gets too hot in warm clothes and the sling once we're inside.

When DS was really little I'd put on the waist belt of my SSC before getting in the car. Then when we got to the store I'd sit in the back and put him in the carrier and buckle it up and then use my coat to cover up the front of us. When I got in the store I would tighten and adjust everything and throw my coat in the cart.

I just got a Kowalli fleece carrier cover and love it! It's this fleece almost pouch vest thing that goes over me and my LO and has pockets in the front for my hands like a sweatshirt. Then I wear my coat open and I stayed warm yesterday in the 40s though I needed a scarf. I think when it's colder using that and LO's fleece bunting will be plenty!

@pui: I bought the Kokola for my baby due in april. The zipper adapter works for my fall coat but since they just velcro on i've contacted my winter coat manufatucturer to get a zipper and then i'll just get the soft side of the velcro sewn on it it and it should work. They are pretty roomy so I think they'd work well for baby wearing.

I only did that in underground heated parkades, but the babywearing group I went to made a fleece poncho. They would put baby on, then their coat, then the fleece poncho over baby's head.

I take off my coat, put on the ergo, take him out of the car seat (usually he isn't wearing a coat), put him in beside the car, and put my coat back on. Yes, we get a little cold but you know, life.

I dressed LO in a lot of layers to keep him warm. Since I have a small sedan, I have to put him in the carrier outside. I take off my jacket, put on the carrier, take LO out of his car seat and put him into the carrier. Then I put my jacket back on and cover us both up. I wore the same jacket I wore during my pregnancy. It worked well for us last year.

@Pui: I looked at the Kokola to extend my current coat for my pregnancy. I'm due April 1st, so unless it's an unseasonably cold spring, I may not need it for baby-wearing. Still, I like the option of being able to convert it, if need be, and it would always be around for future LOs, and next winter, if I'm still baby-wearing at that time.

I'd be interested in hearing how people like it, and how they transfer from car seat to sling and coat, and vice versa.

I asked this on my local baby wearing boards and most moms said they got into the backseat and got LO into their carrier there and then wrapped their coat around both of them. I have had no luck getting LO situated while I'm sitting down so that doesn't work for me. So far I've tried carrying her into the store in her carseat with blanket and then putting her on in the store (but that sucks bc I have to carry the seat and it takes up the whole cart), just trying to put her on really fast while standing in the open door of my car (which is okay-ish but I feel like she might get a little cold that way?) or just pulling her out of the seat, wrapping my coat around her and walking into the store like that, THEN getting her situated. So far #3 seems to work best for us. I put whatever I'm wearing (sling or wrap) on under my coat and have it adjusted and ready to go before I leave the house, then when I get to the store I take my coat off and put her on. Also I just ordered a cheapo winter coat 2 sizes too big from target to make it easier to zip my coat around her because right now none of my heavier coats are big enough to do that very well.

@pui: hello fellow baby wearing canadian momma! This is what my 12 month old son uses, we rock a tula & ring sling 50% of the day including leaving the house. I've found this perfect for baby wearing, also its super easy to remove once we're in a store say if i am going grocery shopping for a long time and not just running in and out of a store. Nice and cozy!

I always put DD in the carrier while in the car. I had her wear her normal clothes but then covered her with a baby wearing coat. That way when she inevitably fell asleep she wasn't bundled for winter while inside and I could regulate my own temp more easily.

I didn't use a sling, but I would wrap myself in my Moby carrier before I left the house and I'd put my son in at our destination. I would usually carry him into the place, and put him on in the bathroom changing area, I couldn't manuever in the back seat of my car.

I don't have much advice on transferring to the car, but as for what LO can wear while in the carrier, I loved this fleece zip up from zutano:

It has fold over hands and feet so you can cover them up. I also loved the fleece booties from zutano.

I live in Canada where obviously it can get very cold in the winter. I'd like to continue babywearing as much as I can, but how do other babywearing mamas in cold climates transfer their baby from their car seat in to their wrap/sling? Do you do it in the car? Outside beside the car? Or do you carry baby in to the store and do it inside? Do you wear the sling under your winter coat? Also what does your baby wear in the sling in the colder months? Any other tips?

Lately I end up just snapping DD's car seat to the stroller because I can't figure this all out!
