Sounds like you've got everything covered! We fostered puppies but I think the youngest was 5 weeks or so. One of ours came as a very skinny runt and seemed to have given up trying to fight for food from his litter mates. So even when they weren't there he wouldn't eat. I put butter on the roof of his mouth (he couldn't figure out how to spit it out that way) about every 2 hrs and left milk out for him. It took a day or 2 of making him eat and then his appetite came back strongly. But it sounds like you already kickstarted his lil appetite again.

We did have one very sad case. They separated a litter bc a few puppies started getting sick and they wanted to prevent the others from catching it. But unfortunately the whole litter ended up passing. We only were fostering one of the pups and when her symptoms started it was hard to differentiate it from all the other sick puppy symptoms that showed up on our doorstep but were easier to fix. It ended up being distemper and was just terrible. But she was the sweetest dear lil thing so it was still nice to have tried to give her love and comfort in her short time. So I hope the best for your sweet pup, that he didn't catch anything and his wound starts to heal. It sounds like you're giving him the best to try and get him there.

If you poke around on this website, you'll find lots of information about caring for puppies: http://leerburg.com/bottlefeeding.htm

In another article, he mentioned warming up rice and putting it in a ziploc bag to serve as a heat source for when they're sleeping.

Keep us updated!

You are awesome! Must be so rewarding to literally save their lives.
I think the fact that the runt made a big poop is a huge milestone. Great job! :)

@Mrs. Turtle: yes i've given them doxycicline (antibiotic), puppy dewormer, and frontline. i consult with a vet over email and am doing all that i can do as far as medicine goes.

i have removed sooo many maggots from dogs while here in el nido. maybe the #1 killer here because it gets bad so quickly.

@Mrs. Bee: I wouldn't do anything different without access to a vet. I'm impressed...I've worked as a vet tech for years and maggots still are the only thing that really grosses me out. If you have any access to antibiotics, obviously that would be ideal. Many human antibiotics are also safe for dogs, though you would have to divide the tabs or capsules a lot for tiny pups. If you want to email me I can help more...if you think you can get any antibiotics.

@Tanjowen: i sprayed them both with combinex, this miracle medicine that i've cured so many dogs here with... ones on death's door! it kills fly larvae which is what kills many dogs that get injuries here. the maggots eat the flesh of the dog. I've pulled out 20 dead maggots from the runt's injury after spraying the combinex. as long as he can withstand the pain, he will heal. but he's also had a hard 3 weeks of life and he's the runt!

So sad! And so sweet you are caring for them. I rescued 3 kittens about that age that were severely dehydrated, and sugar water with a little bit of salt mixed in, given with the syringe is a good way to rehydrate. The biggest issue is going to be the wound care, so hopefully someone with more experience chimes in!

I brought home 2 3 week old puppies on Friday night, the youngest ones I've ever taken care of (they turned 3 weeks old yesterday). They were bit by a dog last Sunday and had open wounds. They had been living outside so they are dirty, weak, and dehydrated, especially the runt. I think the bigger one will make it because his injuries aren't as severe, and he is drinking puppy milk on his own from a bowl. He also walks around while the runt doesn't move much.

I thought the runt wasn't going to make it because he pretty much slept all day yesterday and didn't cry like he did almost all night the night before. I regularly fed him puppy milk through a syringe and he would swallow a little of it, but didn't move at all and didn't show any interest.

Then he took a big poop last night! And I slept with him inside my shirt skin-to-skin and he was much better this morning. I fed him a lot through a syringe and he actually wanted it! He still has a pretty severe injury though that must really hurt him.

Any tips on caring for such young pups? I am keeping them very warm and waking up all night to feed them. It's like having a newborn again!
