@BabyBoecksMom: Thanks for asking! It's looking a lot better today. Yesterday it looked a little scabby, but today it's just a little bit red, and the blisters are gone.

We always use wet cotton wool instead of wipes and pat her down after with a dry cloth, apply a zinc cream then Vaseline over the top of that to act as a barrier. Also, some South American moms in the baby group I go to swear by corn flour as a rash remedy.

@FutureMrsMcK: We've not had many rash issues; one bad normal diaper rash and one yeast one. Regular diaper rash responded well to lots of diaper free time and triple paste (in disposables). Yeast diaper rash responded well to sun/diaper free time and a 3 layer mix of generic monistat gel/ cortisone cream/ boudreaux's natural zinc oxide (pediatrician recommendation). Lotrimin did not work on our yeast. He was in disposables when we applied that 3X a day and then I disinfected our cloth with grapefruit seed extract for 2 weeks.

We only ever use water on cloth wipes, so I can't speak to that!

We recently dealt with a bad rash from antibiotics. Baking soda in the bath + drying well at each change + triple paste cleared it right up.

when DD has a rash I usually wash her bum under the sink, pat dry and apply a lot of aquaphor. The rash usually gets better after 2 days.

I used to keep a paper fan at our changing area to make sure dd was super dry before putting on a new diaper.

Some babies just seem more predisposed than others to diaper rashes. It's not always that the parents are doing or not doing.

We had major diaper rash problems for a while and many of the things above where very helpful - especially the air drying.

The biggest thing eventually was getting rid of our disposable wipes. I use cloth wipes for pee and viva paper towels with water for poops (we're a disposable diaper family, so I just haven't gotten used to the idea of poop in the washing machine!). It's the only thing that has prevented the rashes rather than just treating them all the time.

DD used to get horrible yeast infections with each round of antibiotics (I'm talking blisters down there!). And the doctor had us go diaper less, use Lotramin 3x/day and use Triple Paste. It typically would clear up in a couple days.

@FutureMrsMcK: we started sitting him on the potty at 6 months. So before nakey time, sit him on the potty. And then ever 10 to 20 min until he goes. Then you are home free for a while. That's how we started. Earth mama angel baby balm and coconut oil helped a ton!! Just not at night for us.

@brownie: He's 10 months old.

@cascademom: We have had only a few diaper rash problems, and used Angel Baby Bottom Balm (or whatever it's called). I made the mistake of using Boudreaux's and had an awful time stripping the diapers. I have him diaper-less right now, but I'll probably put him in disposables at night for with Boudreaux's until it clears up. Maybe.

I like the baking soda suggestion a lot. When LO's diaper rash gets bad, I switch up his regular Desitin with Boudreaux's butt paste because it's effective and less stinky than max strength Desitin.

How old? We had the same problems we decided to potty learn and do elimination communication. So the diaper free time. I also did straight prefolds to catch the output but allow airflow. We ended up doing sposies at night and cloth during the day.

I used cloth wipes wet with just water and then always used a dry cloth to dry C off between diapers so there wasn't any damp skin being put in a diaper. It really helped to take those extra seconds to dry him between diapers.

I just spent 15 minutes on the phone with an RN at my pedi's office (who had the loveliest English accent, I could have listened to her talk for hours), and she had a few suggested steps for combating diaper rash that I hadn't considered, so I thought I'd share:

1) Let him go diaper-less as often as possible to air it out. She suggested laying him on them and folding them up over his bits but not snapping them shut, but that wouldn't work for us because it would involved him having to lie still, and that just won't happen.

2) Use warm, wet washcloths instead of diaper wipes.

3) Put a little bit of baking soda in his bath water. (Will apparently also help to soften the water).

4) Diaper cream.

And then if none of that helped improve it try an OTC yeast cream (Lotramin?)

I hadn't considered the washcloth and baking soda!

Do you have any tried and true tips for battling diaper rash?
