@Mrs. Jacks: Thanks. I was told by another mom that he is the type of doctor that will make his mind up on a diagnosis but not tell you anything until you pry it out of him. She said don't let him leave the room until you are satisfied...sigh I'm not sure we are up for the battle right now.

@Cole: Oh goodness that is terrible! I guessthere are some trade offs sometimes.

Bring your thick skin and come prepared with short factual answers and no extra fluff. Try to limit the emotional content too. Sorry to have to tell you that because it's against everything that I believe in as a physician. I'm wishing you good answers and solutions!

We dealt with an infamously mean and brusque doctor when my Dad had cancer. Having all our info and questions ready helped but just mentally expecting a rude person and deciding we were accepting that trade off was part of it for us (he is one of, if not the best surgeon in his field.) We literally looked at it like a mental disability that he couldn't help... He was as awful as we heard but he gave us more than anyone else could.

Best of luck to you! I hope he can help you and remembers his manners!

@SleepyMonkey: Thanks for that! That is exactly why I am not trying to read into the reviews, but I also heard the same comment from a few parents with first hand experience with him :/.

Oddly enough I feel rather blessed that DS is being seen by him given his area of research and position with the hospital. Major strings were pulled by another doctor for DS to even get an appointment in under a month (he has a 6 month wait for new patients) and after reviewing DS's case he moved him up considerably, which puts our total wait time at under a week!

i think reviews can be misleading sometimes because people tend to make more of an effort writing about when they are unhappy with an experience rather than when they are satisfied. i went to a ped that had all these terrible reviews online of being really dismissive of parent concerns and bad bedside manner, and she was "unprofessional" but she ended up being so kind and caring. she was "unprofessional" because she was wearing jeans and sneakers. i loved her, but couldn't stay with her because her location was inconvenient.

anyway, i think its a good idea to go in armed with all the info that you listed above and if you feel like you are being dismissed, then be more aggressive with asking questions...i would be nice about it, but firm and make sure you have a list of everything you want answered and don't let him leave until you are satisfied. good luck!

We have an appointment Monday with a new GI that has only 2 good reviews in a sea of bad ones :(. While parents claim he knows his "stuff", they also complain that his bed side manner is lacking and he is dismissive with their children. I'm trying not to read into the reviews, but I also want to prepare myself for this appointment as much as possible. How would you go about preparing?

I plan on typing a detailed description/timeline of what has been in going on with DS, as well as a brief overview of what we have been through since birth (this part should already be in his chart as he is a patient in another department). I also want to type a list of foods we believe to be safe for him and highlight the ones that he will reguarly eat. I want to give a copy to the doctor and have one for myself that way I don't miss anything and he can look over it with me. Any other tips?
