we have really good staff in my building and no turnover. they all remember our names, bring our packages up for us, open the door every time, remember our families, etc etc. we give the super $100...he has taken care of a lot of stuff for us. doormen $70, porters $30, handyman $50. we spend a lot on it each year, but i think its worth it. we live in nyc.

@PurplePeony: What a great idea, I wish all buildings did that.

@meredithNYC: @LindsayInNY: That is inetersting, all my previous buildings have sent a holiday card with names, but never with suggested amounts.

@hilsy85: I think this is what we might do too. The thing is that our super isn't partuclarly helpful but the doormen are great so I kind of resent tipping the super.

That said, we will live here for a very long time so I guess I had better pony up and do the best I can. @BKCaribBaby: This is such an expensive time of the year in NYC. Mega tips to everyone.

My last building, management sent around a list with suggested amounts per unit and then it would be split among the staff.

I don't know what my current complex does. We have a super and a porter. If they do a group amount, we'll contribute otherwise we'll do it on our own. Probably $100 to the super and $50 to the porter? The super's helped us out a lot this year.

Sigh...please don't remind me. I love those guys, but we have to budget to make sure we have those holiday tips ready. That said they treat us well, so I guess we are doing something right.

When we lived in a condo building, management ran a holiday fund for the employees. Each unit could give whatever they wanted (or decline) and the money was pooled and split evenly. Along with the money, each employee got a list of the people in the building who had contributed. I kind of liked the system, since less well-off people could still give without feeling self-conscious about the size of the tip, but in the other hand there were a few employees I really did NOT like and others who were super, and there was really no way to recognize that (it was allowed, but sort of frowned upon, to give outside management's structure). I don't actually remember how much we usually chipped in though, probably a couple hundred dollars.

We give anywhere from $50 to 100, depending on how helpful/friendly they are. This year, this is the 3rd set of door people we've had, so I think we're probably sticking closer to 50-75, and maybe 75/100 for our super.

We give each person around $50. It ends up being a LOT because our building is very large and there are so many staff members, but we also know holiday tips are very much appreciated by the people who work hard in our building all year long. I think there's some rule of thumb like x% of your annual rent so we follow that.

I lived in a doorman building with a super when I first moved to the city. Gosh, I think we had 6 doormen and we gave them $20 each (3 roommates for a total of $60).

It probably wasn't enough, but it was a long story and all we could reasonably afford.

The only time I ever had a doorman in the city, we had moved out before the holiday season started. But, if I remember correctly, around Thanksgiving the management company circulated a little sheet with suggestions for giving. If your building doesn't do that, I would search the Time Real Estate section online. I think it's a topic they cover pretty much yearly.

If you live in a condo or other serviced building, what are you planning on doing for your building staff for the holidays? I'm curious to see what others will be tipping this year!
