@meredithNYC: So, we waited for a long time to transition DS out of a crib (like, 32 months long time), and he almost never gets out of his toddler bed on his own! It's awesome. I figured we'd never be able to keep him in there, but somehow he has this conviction that once he's in bed, it's just like the crib in the sense that he needs us to come get him if he wants to get up.
This has happened to a few other friends- their kids seemed to not really understand that once they were in a bed, they were capable of getting out on their own :)

@Lozza: Yeah, my in-laws are in the UK and apparently the Gro Clock is a pretty big thing there. I think the whole concept of having an easily recognized "symbol" that it's time to get out of bed is brilliant. But yes, it's a definite work in progress with our LO. If she were in a toddler bed and thus, able to leave whenever she wanted, I'm not sure how it would work!

@meredithNYC: We use a similar strategy and it works great for us. We just have a desk lamp with a timer (like the kind you might use for Christmas lights); LO calls it "the wake up light." He knows that if he wakes up and the "wake up light" is off, it's still nighttime and he needs to go back to sleep, whereas if the wake up light is ON, it's time to get up and he can call us to come get him. (I'm awakened every day about 6:01 AM on weekdays and 7:01 AM on weekends with "MOMMY DADDY THE WAKE UP LIGHT IS ON!"
I'm not sure how well it would have worked when he was younger though- we didn't start till he was about 2.5.

Have you considered something like a Gro Clock?
http://www.amazon.com/Gro-clock-Children-Groclock-Shipping-Worldwide/dp/B00DUW3WUA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1396273886&sr=8-1&keywords=gro-clock

We just started using this with my 22 month old and while she doesn't get the concept completely, she's getting there. She loves saying "goodnight" to the moon and "good morning" to the sun. It's a nice little routine.

I know it's expensive (ours was given as a Christmas gift from the grandparents), but there seem to be some cheaper, similar options on Amazon.

@crystbum: LO will wake up and play maybe 1/20 of the time. The rest of the time she wakes as of she's laying on hot coals. There's no way to leave her in hopes of her going back to sleep, though that worked when she was younger.

Sometimes for us, if LO gets up before DH, we let her stay and play in her room. Most of the time, she will fall back asleep until her normal wake up time which is around 6am.

@Mrs. Bee: I didn't think about how being able to be outside might help. Thankfully, spring weather is kind of here and we can get out more.

@Weagle: you could try getting her a lot more sunlight/exercise?

sometimes these things are just a phase you have to ride out. :(

@Mrs. Bee: She goes to bed between 7:30-8 and is waking at 6:15-6:45, except on weekends. Then she's sleeping until 7:30-8. Naps are usually 2-3 hours. I wouldn't be concerned about the total amount of sleep she's getting, except the way she acts in the mornings indicates that she's definitely not sleeping late enough. Shorter/longer naps don't seem to have any effect on her nighttime sleep.

I have no advice because P was a really early riser for a while (4:45-5). Luckily she has started getting up around 6-6:30 which is a massive improvement. There were times that she got up and was playing while I accidentally fell asleep...oops.

For the past several weeks LO (23 months) has been consistently waking 1-2 hours earlier than she used to. I know it's earlier than she should wake too, because she's ready for naptime by 11AM when she wakes early, whereas she naps at 1 when she sleeps to a normal time. Also, she only does this during the week, not weekends. Any tips? We've done earlier and later bedtimes, nap length doesn't make a difference, and just leaving her doesn't do anything.
