I have an almost 3 month old and totally just realize that this is also my 3rd but only baby that I get to spend more time at home with! But both my other kids managed to stay home with DH/grandma when I first went back to work. We pretty much just go by wake time windows to know when to put down to nap and then do roughly 3-4 hrs between feeding. But if I’m with him I’ll still feed on demand

@LemonJack: Yeah, we’ve made no progress at all on naps, but I realized that rocking her to sleep at night could be hurting, so in the past few days have been putting her to bed awake and just staying until she falls asleep and that’s working so far. Hopefully once she can go down alone at night it’ll translate to daytime sleep. We’re in the same position w/swaddling, she sleeps so well, but she’s rolling all the time now so we had to cut it off cold turkey.

@karenbme: I saw your comment about it not going well. Every baby is different, and you should do what makes you comfortable. If you want to try CIO, there are a lot of resources for different sleep training techniques. If you’re not comfortable with it, that’s okay too. I feel like there’s always a lot of pressure both ways, and it really should only be about works best for you and your family.

@Shantuck: Thanks! I agree it’s good to see that 90 minute windows are acceptable. He’s often tired again at the 90 minute mark, especially right away in the morning. We don’t start solids until six months either, so this should work for us.

@karenbme: I didn’t see that you asked how it was going. Sorry! It’s going okay. We are still relying on the swing more than I’d like to, and he’s struggling to sleep without the swaddle. He is going down by himself in his crib again, but he has to be swaddled to do so. I’m hoping to start weaning him off of it soon. How’s it going for you guys??

@Shantuck: Thanks for this. I feel better about DD's wake windows only being ~90 minutes, 2 hours if we push after this since it's pretty much a 3 hour cycle. She's been a sleeper since the beginning so I guess we'll roll with it.

Note: There is a separate schedule for 4-6 months but it involves feeding solid foods, which I don’t typically start doing until 6 months. Therefore, if you don’t start solids until later, you would use this schedule until you do solids.

@LemonJack: How’s it going? We’re not having a whole lot of success... 😕 I keep waiting for the desperately fighting sleep phase to end like everyone says it should, but it seems like we’re just going to have to let her cry in her crib at some point here.

Do you know roughly what the daycare schedule is? I’d try to follow that so it’s not such a big adjustment when you go back.

DS2 is 19 months and I’m trying to stick to his daycare schedule, he’d only been there 6 months.

@nwm: @Kemma: You’re right that I should pay closer attention to his schedule and go from there. I’ve definitely let it go these last few weeks since I’ve been so busy and overwhelmed, but want to start working on this. I like the idea of writing down his natural schedule for a couple of days and going from there.

@karenbme: Ugh, sorry you’re in this position too, but at least it’s not just me. I just never had to worry about it as they naturally fell into a routine at daycare.

@catgirl: I’ll take a look at this, thanks!

I would think that if your family has a reasonably constant routine thenbaby will start to fall in to one based around you. Little things like getting up at the same time each day then having meals at roughly the same time will all help baby find their rhythm. You could also keep a note of baby’s nap and feed times for a few days and see what sort of pattern emerges.

Is there any rough outline to typical sleep that you can nudge into a stricter schedule? We also felt it was time for our 4.5 mo so we just picked nap times and then started adjusting feedings so he’d eat as soon as he wakes up then again about 20 minutes before we want him to go down.

This is my easiest sleeper by far so I know this is easier said than done but I honestly think just picking nap times is the key and after a couple days they’ll start following your lead on that.

We used the E.A.S.Y. schedule with DD, it was very easy to stick to and she responded well. (She’s five and it feels like a lifetime ago, but many of my friends have had success with it as well.)

@LemonJack: no advice, but I’m right there with you. DH and I were talking about this same thing today—schedules and getting her sleeping in her crib. DD has never napped in her crib really and with the situation now it’s a problem. We’re going to try scheduling first and then hope that moving to her crib will be easier once she’s used to consistent nap times. Our plan is to try for naps from 7:30-8:30, 10-11:30/12, 2-3:30/4 and 6-7, which pretty much follows her pattern on good sleep days. It feels like a lot, but she still gets tired after 90 minutes or so of awake time. We get her up at 6:30 and bedtime is 8:30, which is pretty consistent already.

@Shantuck: I’d love a screen shot too if you can.

We’ve used the sample schedules with the moms on call book successfully with my older two kids. We just had baby #3 about 3.5 weeks ago and are already trying to introduce the schedule to him as well for purposes of our sanity. It takes awhile to get on the schedule but we keep just feeding and putting down for naps according to the schedule and eventually the baby catches on. I’m happy to try to screen shot the schedule for 4-6 months and post it to your wall.

Help on how to get a 4.5 month old on a schedule! He’s my third, but my first two ended up naturally on a schedule at daycare. He was only at daycare for three weeks before we started working from home, so he was just starting to get the hang of it. Now that we’re home for the foreseeable future, it’s on us to get him on a schedule and it seems daunting. When with me, all my babies have been fed on demand and placed down to sleep when tired, which is just fine on maternity leave and weekends, but I would like to be more scheduled with him since I need to be working and homeschooling while home with him. It’d be easier if I could start planning around specific naps times.

Right now DH and I are simply focusing on getting him to nap in his crib. He was doing well swaddled in there, but has regressed. He struggled at daycare the first few weeks so he was mostly held, and we’ve also dropped the swaddle, so he’s really not liking the crib. I’m assuming we should focus on that first then work on the schedule, but I’m not sure.

Tips and tricks? Our older two have quiet time at 1 and bedtime is at 8.
