While DS is falling asleep for his nap I do a few quick things. (He's a light mapper so I try to be quiet during nap!)

And when DH is bathing DS I tidy up the toys and h load the dishwasher if needed and wipe the counters.

I need to increase my sweeping/mopping/vacuuming frequency for sure.

I have to do a little bit every day, otherwise the house gets over run with stuff....my main issue is clutter, so I do try to do a 15 minute run through and put everything away that I can.

As for dishes, we don't eat a lot of meals at home, but I do run the dishwasher regularly otherwise it begins to stink. I would think it we ate 3 meals a day at home, I'd have to run it every single day and I am okay with that.

Never feel on top. I always feel like as I work on cleaning one thing a couple other things are already getting dirty.

@cascademom: I do something similar. I am constantly picking up things as I walk through a room. Or if I am waiting for my coffee to be brewed, I'll do a quick tidy up of the kitchen. I WAH, so occasionally I'll take a 10-15 break to fold laundry or put something away or even vacuum if it needs to be done.. I try to have the kids pick up the living room every evening so that we don't have toys all over the place in the morning. I feel like I do little things all day long and it helps. I'm also a crazy neat freak, so I can't rest if things aren't tidy.

@MrBee: Um, I don't? JK. My house definitely isn't as neat as I would like it, but I prioritize. DS's laundry always comes first. And since we are cloth diapering, I make those a priority, too. Diapers are done every 2-3 days, his clothes and mine are done together on the alternate days. I'm now letting DH manage his own, since he seems to have more time in the evenings. I've gotten into the routine of folding and hanging right away, otherwise it'll sit in the basket. That's my only tip.

As for the rest of the house, we split chores. That way things are more manageable. DH vacuums and I mop/sweep. I clean counters and he does pots and dishes that can't fit in the dishwasher. My only complaint is that he prefers to do them when he comes home from work the next day, so they sit in the sink all day. All because he wants to "relax" after supper. :bummed: To me, the house just doesn't feel clean with pots in the sink.

Still, there is lots that never seems to get done; see above comment.

I read off of a Pinterest pin where one woman grabs 5 things and puts them in their correct place when she's coming out of a room, etc. I find that approach helpful. I use Todoist too.

I have a schedule for the laundry (I do kid washing on Tuesday and Friday, big people Wednesday and Saturday, then towels / linens and anything else on the weekend) and my husband is a very tidy guy! Seriously though, my husband is the tidy-up person in our house but I usually do the rest of the housework (vacuuming, bathrooms etc) so it works pretty well for us.

@Astro Bee: a a monthly cleaning service sounds awesome, but that's only one day! How do you keep your place clean the other ~29 days of the month?

Um, I am not the one to be asking this. I finally gave in and hired a monthly cleaning service. Having an infant is as good an excuse as any to have a slightly untidy house, but I dread anyone looking at my showers. Can you say soap scum? Yet another one of the many chores that I find I'm never able to get around to. And cleaning the oven, and washing the windows, and.... :meh: The cleaning service is a bit of a luxury, but my piece of mind is not!

I just feel like there is constantly something to be done. The laundry overwhelms me, I wash/dry/fold and then I'll leave in the basket but then it all piles up on the floor so I'll put the clothes away and then there's 3 more loads already. My floors always need to be swept. Always dishes to be done. So it's not so much I can't figure out how to manage it, I just can't understand how it never ends

I just...... do stuff. lol. I'm a horrible procrastinator and I tend to just not do things, even when they are simple, because I don't feel like it or because I may not be able to do it all at once. I make a serious effort now to just do stuff as soon as it needs to be done. And if I can't finish, that's fine. Sometimes it takes me 3 tries to get the dishwasher emptied... but 3 years ago it might've taken 3 days.....

Lately I've been feeling like it's impossible to stay on top of all of the chores! It's usually tough but manageable, but the kids have been home a lot due to school holidays... and they just make such a mess. Some of it the kids can clean up (toys) but other stuff falls on us parents (plates/dishes from 3 meals at home, etc.). We have a small dishwasher and do the dishes 2-3x a day.

Do you feel on top of the household chores? What are some of your tips/tricks for staying on top of things?
