We went on vacation when LO was 4 months and he is NOT the type of baby who sleeps well on the go or van handle going to bed too late. We tried to do at least 2 of his 3 naps in the playpen and we only ate out for dinner once the whole week. We were staying at a friend's house so it was easier than staying in a hotel.

I would hope that your mil would respect the fact that you don't want your LO to be overtired and cranky. My friend saw right away what a mess LO was if he didn't get proper sleep and she never hassled me to just 'let him sleep in my arms.'

Good luck!

Oh no, it's never easy to go on vacation when you have one schedule and another group has a different one.

What I've learned is to stick to my son's schedule as much as possible. My family accommodated us as much as they could, but in the end, on the nights when my son was just too tired, we bowed out and they understood.

Good luck!

@Mrsdaredevil: that is so frustrating! The good news is now you're a parent and you can do things your way. Haha. Saying that to parents is fun!

Will she have her shots by the time you go? That could be a good out if you don't want her out and about too much.

@mediagirl: I do think we will eat in our hotel suite a lot so we can stay with DDs bedtime. They are just such night owls...I think we will have to miss out on a lot of stuff. It is just hard because my MIL always tells me she never had a schedule with her kids and they turned out fine...so she is not supportive or helpful when it comes to sticking with our routine for vacation. Poo.

Can you not go out to eat and eat at home? You could eat in and just spend time with the family during the day? That's probably what would do. We're going to be vacationing at my in-laws when she is 2.5mo. Thankfully(?) they never eat out. So we don't have to worry about that. And they're asleep by 8. Hahaha.

We took a trip when DS was 3 months old and he slept mostly in the car or in the stroller so it was different than what he was use to but as long as I nursed him and he wasn't over stimulated--he seemed fine! When he was 7 months, that was a lot harder because he was so aware of his routine...he was much crankier when we took a trip then!

oh man. we took LO on "vacation" when she was 2-3 months old too. we tried to stick to schedule as much as possible, but sometimes it was impossible because of planned events and etc.
we were out of town for about 4 days and just went with the flow. she didn't have a hard time going back to her normal schedule when we got home.
traveling can be really stressful with a LO so try to enjoy yourself best you can!

I am taking LO on family vacation next week, and I am really nervous about her schedule getting all screwed up. DH's family does not go out to eat every night until 8:00 p.m. or so, but we usually put DD down at 7:30 for bedtime. I am afraid that a week of changing her schedule will form a bad habit!
Also, my MIL keeps saying that I don't need to worry about staying in the hotel room while she naps because she can just take her naps in people's arms while we are out! I am soooo not comfortable with that. It will form bad habits and then I feel like I will have to re-train her to fall asleep on her own in her crib when we come back.

[Sorry for the mini vent, I am obviously just kind of stressed about this vacation.]

Anyone have tips on vacationing with a baby this young? Any ideas on how I can keep her schedule, or should I bag the schedule while we're gone?
