@Bao: Yeah! It's so weird, but they must get it from DH because he only does #2 in the master bathroom.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: AWESOME!

@avivoca: we have one in the laundry room and one in our unused downstairs bathroom. We moved it once and Maya peed in the shower. We thought it was a fluke, and then she pooped in the shower. I guess that's her way of saying she wants her little box back in the bathroom.

So I guess that means our cats literally have their own bathroom.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: oh we planned on getting two! I thought @avivoca: meant to keep it near us til she's well trained then take it to the basement where it belongs, maybe I read wrong!

@Mrs. Jump Rope: We have one box that they poop in and one that they pee in. It's fairly comical to watch.

@Bao: we actually still use two litter boxes!

Bailey will not poop in the same box as Maya. She'll pee in Maya's box but that's it. Maya won't poop in baileys. They're... special? Ha

We have two female cats and did the same thing that Mrs. Jump Rope did. It was very easy. I would definitely keep a litter box closer for the kitten and get her used to using the other one downstairs.

@Bao: I remember reading about the combination, but I didn't think it ever mattered since ours are both spayed. We adopted them so we never had kittens.

I think their personality has a lot to do with it. Bella was laid back and chill, but she was definitely queen bee and the hardest to transition with. She was not happy that we adopted Maya, but Maya loved her and always wanted to be right by her side. The two ended up loving each other in the end.

But, Bella died and Maya was literally lost without her partner in crime. We adopted bailey, and had a super smooth transition with the two. Bailey is a bit more stand offish but loves snuggling.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Wow great tips, I never even thought to do a slow intro like that, I'm so glad I asked! So your cats are both females? I was trying to read up online about which combos are the best but got no real good answer. I'm pretty sure this kitten is a female as well (we have Rudy, female), but since she is so young it's kind of hard to tell and I'm no expert on cat genitalia ;)

We've had two easy transitions!

Create a safe room for your kitten. Make sure it's got its own litter box, food and water dishes, toys and a DOOR.

On day 2, rub your kitten with a kitchen towel. Shut the door, and let your other cat smell the towel. She'll hiss, growl and be pissed. Let her go.

Day 3 & 4, same thing.

Day 5, bring the kitten out in a carrier. Let your first cat sniff her (she should be familiar with the smell), prance around the cage, etc. she'll hiss and be pissed, but it's important you keep the kitten in the carrier. It serves as a protective barrier between the two. Once she calms down and walks away, you can let the kitten out of the carrier.

That's how we introduced our first cat with Maya. It took them a week before they snuggled!

When we got bailey, Maya snuck in the safe room and the two were insta-friends.... But Maya is suuuuper easy going and laid back. Our first cat Bella was queen bee!

We had no intentions of getting another pet right now, but there are some kittens in need (they were abandoned in a Rubbermaid tub on a deserted road) so we want to take one in! He/she will have their first round of shots and will be fixed before we get to bring him/her home. We have a four year old female cat and we are worried about introducing another cat to her. If anyone has any tips on how to make this a smooth transition for our other cat and any other tips on kitten care, please let me know!

Also, our current cats litter box is all the way in the basement which is three levels down from where we all sleep, wondering if that will be an issue in the beginning for a kitten? We could always keep the kittens box elsewhere in the meantime if need be. We have a few weeks still to figure out details :)
