LO has been using a spoon since a little before he was a year with success and little mess (he never got really messy except a little at the face at first and we never used/use bibs). He also really only started to eat solids at that age (first solid was at 9.5 mo), so I'm not sure if that played into it. Now he always has to have a spoon or fork to eat anything! We didn't do much in terms of teaching him...he just wanted to feed himself with the spoon and in an attempt to get him to eat we let him.

We used metal utensils by Onieda (we have the bear ones). He actually refused to eat anything off the VitalBaby spoons we initially purchased. http://www.oneida.com/fine-flatware/child-and-baby-flatware.html

@betsyboop: We're in the process of teaching this, but I don't expect any success until well after a year. It's hard for them to learn how to turn their wrist to get the food in their mouths. We're not being strict about it at all though. There's not a chance I'm letting her try to feed herself purees with a spoon. She doesn't have the skill, and I don't have the patience.

@Weagle: Thanks, I'll try the spoon idea. She's eating table food. Did you start with non-pureed foods?

I think it's hard to teach at this age, but one way to start is to let her have a spoon while she's eating. I don't know if she's eating table food yet, but that will be much less messy than purées.

My LO is 9 months and I'm thinking about teaching her to use a spoon to feed herself. Anyone have recommendations in terms of gear (suction bowls, spoons) they found particularly useful, and best foods to start with?

I'm really NOT looking forward to how messy this process will inevitably be!
