I always pump right after a nursing session. So in your situation, I'd probably pump just the right side after nursing that side. You may not produce that much in the bottle, but the extra stimulation should help compensate for the decreased attention by your LO on that side. And ideally, eventually he'll just get a greater amount nursing on that side. As far as time goes, I usually either pump for about 10-15 min straight, or power pump if I have the time (10 min, 5 min break, repeat 2-3 times)

@cranberryapple: interesting. The latch issue sounds like it is definitely linked to it. I guess keep trying to change-up the latch? (Different position for nursing, make your boob like a hamburger to get it deep in baby's mouth, etc....but I am sure your lactation consultant and you have already tried that all). A friend of mine with a 8 month old has had the same problem the whole time and she just says that's just the way it is and her guy just deals with it, BUT she is a 2-boob nurser at each session.)

There's always so much to learn about breastfeeding even when you've got it perfected, eh? :)

@cvbee: I like your idea, but my right nipple ain't lookin' so hot. My LO has latch issues even though we've seen a lactation consultant three times!! I don't think it could handle that much nursing, at least for now! I want to check to see if LO is tongue-tied, cuz I don't understand why it has been so difficult, and he's 3.5 months already! That right boob has been trouble since day one! :(

I had a worse side as well (funny enough, now I have reversed sides). I wouldn't worry about when you pump. My understanding from la leche league, online research and personal experience, you have milk available. In the mornings, I would pump one side while he nursed the other. Then switch him to that one afterwards. He got more hindmilk and stimulated it. He wasn't upset because he was mostly full from the other side and it helped me.

I don't pump so I'm not even sure if I have this issue.

My guess would be instead of 'alternating each time', to start with the runt each time because that's when they drink the most vigorously. So instead of doing runt, other, runt, other, do: runt-other, just runt, runt-other, just runt.

That's my thought.

I have the exact same issue, but nothing has made my left breast catch up with my right. At this point LO is 6 months old and he gets plenty to eat, so I've pretty much stopped stressing about it.

So I have one boob (my right one) that I like to refer to as the "runt" because it produces less than half of what the left one produces. I heard that this is normal but I still can't get over the fact that LO tends to fuss when he is offered the runt, particularly at the end of the day. I also worry that him not using it enough is also decreasing my supply on that side. I want to start pumping to stimulate milk production, but wonder what the optimal time would be. I alternate each breast at each feeding to make sure he empties one out entirely. I'm afraid of pumping too close to when it's time to use the right one just in case it doesn't fill up fast enough, so I'm guessing I should pump some time after using it? Any other tips to help the right one catch up a bit?
