I don't know if there is a good way...I ate less or equal to the same amount I did pre-preg and I have gained close to 40 at 37 weeks...with tons of healthy foods. I love to exercise but have had it restricted, so that would probably help.

I also agree, don't stress about it now. I thought for sure I'd gain a ton in the first and get scolded -all I could eat were white carbs, peanut butter, and juice. I didn't gain anything until well into the 2nd tri and am at 9 lbs at 25 weeks. Eat when you're hungry, eat when it helps nausea, and worry about weight gain once you're feeling better :)

I was the same way.

My tip is to make up for it in 2nd and 3rd trimester when you feel better. I think doing a 30 minute power walk every day kept me healthy and I tried to eat more normally then.

My other tip is to not worry too much, but do keep an eye on things. Your body will do what it needs to.

I gained 15 pounds first trimester (due to eating to overcome nausea, like you, and also because I was too tired to even walk the dog) but only 25 pounds in my total pregnancy. I got back to pre-pregnancy weight really fast.

I agree with Hilsy. I've eaten pretty healthy overall and didn't really changing my eating habits (besides not being able to eat during first trim nausea) and I'm STILL up 22 lbs overall at 26.5 weeks! :(

The only thing that could change my weight gain is definitely working out.... but regarddlesss... eat lots of grains, veggies, and fruits!

Thanks, ladies! I am eating pretty healthy and I'm still working out, though it has slowed since I'm a lot more tired. I'll just try to focus on the overall trend.

First of all, as other posters have said, pregnancy weight gain is wacky! You can gain nothing one month, and then 10 pounds the next, without changing your eating habits much (it happened to me!). I would suggest making sure that you're eating healthy foods (whole grains if you are really craving carbs, fruits and veggies when you can), and stay active as much as you can.

My doctor specifically advised me to watch my weight at my second appointment. I was about 150 pounds at 5'4", which was more than where I wanted to be and he didn't want to see my weight go over 200 pounds. At my last weigh in, I was 190. I have no idea what I was when I delivered, but it was around there.

@MrsStroller @MrsLantern: Agreed. Everyone--and every pregnancy--is different, and the overall pattern is more helpful/ provides more insight.

In the early weeks of first tri, I shot up 5lbs! And towards the end of first tri, I was 2lbs heavier than pre-pregnancy. It was definitely the bloat for me.

It feels that with weight, it's more helpful to look at the overall pattern than individual day to day fluctuations.

I think as long as you eat healthy and keep moving (just walk for a half hour or so every day, if you don't feel like doing more), then you'll be ok. I gained 12lbs in the first trimester and then none at all in the second. Everyone's body is different, so you just have to do what you can by making good choices and just accepting that you're doing the best you can.

I gained 40lbs during my pregnancy and rarely ate more than 1700-1900 calories a day (about 300 more calories than I was eating before), I walked a lot, drank a lot of water and didn't eat sweets. My best friend at twice that and didn't exercise at all and gained 20-25 lbs with each of her two pregnancies. Everyone is different! At 8 months pp I've lost most of the baby weight (lost most by 6m) and I think the few pounds I have left are because I don't exercise as much as I used it.

Do what you can to eat healthy, but in the end, your body is going to do what your body is going to do. Really, the best thing to *manage* is any anxiety about weight gain (it still comes and goes for me). . . your medical team/ care providers will let you know when to worry, if at all.

Despite my best efforts I have gained almost 40 pounds at 36 weeks (I hit 37 weeks on Thursday). I started out on the small side (5'7+ and a size 2/4), but no matter whether I ate super clean and avoided junk, or whether I indulged a bit here and there, I still gained every week (and usually more during the weeks where my diet was healthy and well-balanced!).

My best advice is to NOT weigh yourself at home. Wait for your appointments, and even then, you may not want to know the numbers (and instead rely on your healthcare team to let you know whether there is any cause for concern).

I don't really have any advice, and I'm also worried about this as I was already on the chunky side before getting pregnant, but so far I'm 11 weeks and have only gained 1 lb, so I must be doing something right, right? (Or I've gained a TON and just lost all my muscle mass since I stopped going to the gym, oops)

What I've been doing is just trying to eat small meals every 3 hours (to keep the nausea at bay!). Here's a sample of what I eat in a day:

Breakfast: English Muffin with Peanut Butter and Fruit

Lunch: Lean Cuisine (or something similar)

Afternoon Snack: Veggies/Fruit and Cheese

Pre-Dinner Snack: Trailmix or a cookie (I just baked them, I have to eat them!)

Dinner: Chicken/Steak with potatoes/pasta and veggies, or some sort of pasta dish - I'm trying to stick to a normal "serving" and not eat too much for dinner.

I think as long as you are eating healthy (not junk food or too much processed sugar) you should be ok to just let yourself eat whenever you are hungry unless your doctor tells you that you are getting too big.

I'm in the first trimester phase where I get super nauseated if I get hungry and only a few things sound edible. I've been trying to eat smaller meals/snacks, throughout the day. I've been fairly successful with smaller meals because eating a bigger meal makes me nauseated, too. I stepped on the scale and noticed I had already gained 2 pounds. I suppose it could be partly from insane bloat and a rapidly growing chest region, but it's making me anxious about weight gain. I'm really trying to not gain much weight since I'm on the fluffying side already.

Does anyone have any good tips on how they managed their pregnancy weight?
