@MrsTiz: Its such a generational thing! My dad delivered me and when my mom tells the story, she says in this super dramatic voice, "HE LET ME TEAR!!" She was telling me this story expecting me to be all horrified and I was like, "oh, I've heard that's beteter." One of the girls in our birthing class was with her MIL and she also said her tears were worse than their her episiotomies.

@littlebug: My ILs tell me they think I'm going to be early. I don't know why, but it really bugs me! I think it's kind of like, "why would you wish my baby to be premature???"

I let it slip yesterday at our shower that we are planning to cloth diaper. BIG mistake! Everyone in the room was of the opinion that we are total idiots for wanting to do it. Because they think it's still the old pin fastener. I didn't even bother trying to explain. I just said, "We'll see."

I don't get much advice, really, but I am sick to death of the comments that I am going to deliver early, or that the baby's going to be huge, or that I am huge, or that I must have twins, or whatever. It just makes me feel awful.

Oh lorrrd, my MIL tells me (any anyone within earshot) about how my dog is so mean, and bites, and is going to kill my babies and if I keep the dog she's taking the kids.

...um, what? My dog has never so much as even looked at someone mean, and i'm pretty sure you won't be taking my kids, MIL.

I heard my aunt SCREAMING the other day about how my cousins wife was giving birth to their DS and the doctor was "going to let her tear naturally! I said "NO YOU AIN'T GONNA LET HER TEAR! Can you believe that?!?! That stupid man was gonna let her tear, I told him he better snip her and snip her sew her up straigh"

I was SO embarrased for her lol

@allison: HA! I contended with that one more than a few times. I would explain that MOST of the time natural tearing (should it happen) is better!! If you have a bedsheet and pull both sides reall tight, nothing happens, take that same bedsheet and cut into it, then pull, what happens? The sheet rips! That analogy shut most people up.

@tororojo: We got a hand-me-down drop-side crib. I went online to the manufacturer's website, and they had an option to order a kit (free) to convert the drop side into a regular, non-drop side. It was just a couple of metal brackets and some screws. But it saved us a ton of money! I love the look of the crib, though, so I'd probably feel differently if I didn't.

This is slightly different, but I hate it when people assume that choices I make are because of pregnancy--i.e. I have never liked tea but we live in TX and sweet tea is everybody's favorite drink. DH's family members have asked several times "oh, are you avoided caffeine b/c you're pregnant"? Nope, I think tea is gross but I'd love a Dr. Pepper!

Also, MIL keeps talking about the best baby products from the 80's that she used for all her kids and how they should be available still...however will we survive with only newfangled products?

I find myself getting more and more advice as I get further along and I'm over it too! A coworker asked me at a recent potluck if I should be eating deviled eggs (as I got ready to pop one in my mouth) and when I said it was fine she was like "are you sure? I don't think you're supposed to eat those." And she's never been pregnant! It was the day I got my GD diagnosis and I wanted to pop her one.

@yoursilverlining: my stepmom's cats do jump in DS's pack n play when we are visiting! I'm sure if we were there all the time they'd learn to stay away, but since we are only there now and then they like to "investigate". But it's not like they'd hurt DS. Or that just having a cat (these were really young cats too!) means something bad will happen.

Advice is something you just have to grow a thick skin for. Depending on the topic, I explain my thoughts, but most of the time I smile, nod, and do what I want.

I eat a (mostly) vegetarian diet, and I swear every time I or husband talk to family on the phone, they ask what I'm eating for protein. "Tell her it's not just her anymore. She needs to eat some meat!" Uh, thanks. I'm aware of the baby's need for protein. Got it covered.

Also, my mom INSISTS that I'm an idiot for not wanting an episiotomy. "That baby's gonna rip you to shreds!" Ugh.

@sea_bass: my MiL told me my cat would kill my baby. That she would jump in the crib and sit on LO and smother her to death. Hmmm, LO is almost 6 months and the cat has never once jumped in the crib; with or without LO in it. It's such an old wives tale that cats try to kill babies. :(

Plus her family is kinda poster children for the hygiene hypothesis. Her place is always immaculate, lots of bleach, no pets, and all of her kids have bad allergies or asthma.

Yep, I hear you.

I am in the same boat. So far I have only told my parents I am pregnant and I get loads of unwanted advice. Last night it was about how I shouldn't gain anymore than 20lbs (I am normal BMI now). I was like, "Well I was told a pound a week is what I should aim for". And she was going on and on about how that cant be the case and 20lbs was the maximum I should be "allowed" to gain.

Sigh.

Recently it was how my cats are going to kill my baby. That wasn't stressful at all.

Double sigh.

I'm getting tired of advice and opinions....even though I know I will just get worse after the baby.

My MIL is great, but she does like to say what we will/won't like. Like my SIL was looking at our registry and asked what a sleep sack was. My MIL immediately piped up and started talking about how not all babies like sleep sacks and none of hers did and they are pointless.

Or I've had to get up every single night for months because I'm starving. No matter how much I eat before bed, I am hungry a few hours later. It's gotten worse in my third trimester because my heartburn is bad and I can't eat a lot at once. So as my husband offered to make me a turkey sandwich before bed, she started talking about how she never ate before bed when she was pregnant and I was teaching my metabolism to expect food in the middle of the night, and babies can go all night without sleeping, and she only gained 24 pounds.... I don't think she is being judgmental but in my sensitive state, it kinda hurts!
