@artbee: we have the same issue with the grapes and dogs, luckily they don't seem all that interested, but LO is constantly trying to share her food with them.
Do you give LO a plate of her own food? I am learning when I do this my LO won't eat anything but if I offer the same exact food from my own plate she's all for it.

Not sure if the guessing game goes away, really. But she will learn not to throw food on the floor eventually! DD can talk but I can't really ask her what she wants for every meal ahead of time. I just cook the family meal, catered to her taste buds, and it is either a hit or a miss. I don't really let it frustrate me anymore, but I totally understand what you're saying because I used to feel that way. I just figure that she isn't so little anymore so she'll eat when she is hungry. And she can talk and tell me if she's hungry.

Yes, this is the hardest part that even though it may be her favorite one day or something I know she likes, the next night she will throw it on the floor. So frustrating!

We still have an abnormally good eater, I think, but at just shy of 14 mos, he will have days where he gobbles something and then throws the same thing the next day. Basically, I just try to give small portions of several things (he pretty much will always eat fruit and cheese and carrots, usually pasta and tofu, sometimes toast and chicken and broccoli, etc) so if there's something he decides is no bueno, it's not a huge amount on the floor.

Also, I know he will throw stuff more when he's not as hungry!

Oh geez! There's really nothing you can do! Maybe just stick to what you know she likes, and try to add in a little bit of different foods with it? Even then, it might end up on the floor! Yikes! Sorry to hear this!

Yep. One of the reasons why i used to be so afraid of trying new foods with my Lo! I think we're finally at a point where I know what she likes and she's been pretty open to trying new foods.

I can't help with baby problems (still TTCing!). But for the dog, can you gate him/her out of the kitchen or at least out of the throwing radius? Or have a crate nearby just for meal times? Maybe if throwing the food is less fun (no dog to eat it), she might do it a little less, too.

My dog also has a very sensitive stomach and is severly allergic to a ton of food, so I empathize on thrown scraps being a huge no-no. Her allergies to poultry are so bad they actually give her seizures, so I'll definitely have to keep her out of the kitchen when we get to that phase.

@artbee: I thought so! =o) Liv eats an incredible amount of fruit as well. Sometimes I sprinkle garlic powder (she looooves that) on chickpeas and have her eat those for protein. Thats also why I made the quinoa patties. Lots of protein and they are frickin delicious

@artbee: I won't lie, she will throw them too! But hopefully less since she will be occupied by the novelty in the beginning! The good news is the throwing thing is just another of those fun, developmental phases!

@Cole: Thanks for the advice! I was wondering when we should start bowls and utensils.... I was scared she'd throw them too!

@LivsMama: Keeping pre made food around is smart! My LO seems to only want fruit, which isn't the worst thing in the world but I wish she would get something else in there like protein. I tried to get her to eat a chicken nugget the other day and she wasn't having any of it. Only grapes!

LOL its just the age. Liv is 13 months and sometimes I go through 3 or 4 different things before she actually eats them. My tricks are to cover whatever it is with cheese or pasta sauce. Pasta sauce has a 100% success rate, cheese is about 85% lol. Our dog is also loving mealtimes.

Also, another thing I do is keep premade stuff handy. I make huge batches of meatballs and freeze them so I can make a few very quickly if I have to. Ill make quinoa patties (she LOVES those) and keep them in the fridge. I also keep "chicken" nuggets (veggie nuggets) and Falafel and chicken sausage on hand for really rough days.

With the 15 month old I take care of I have some limited success with showing her two things and usually she really wants one of them. I also only give her a really small amount, like two bites until I know she is hungry and going to eat it. Another thing we do sometimes is just pull her chair up to the table, give her a toy and everyone else eats as usual and offer her bites. At some point she will usually show an interest in something and we give her a serving then.

I have found she is really hitting a stage where she wants to explore so much that sitting still to eat is really hard so we try for a few minutes then let her go and try again in an hour. Breakfast is usually a hit (she will typically share with her mom or sister) lunch is served in two parts about 1.5 hours apart and by the time dinner rolls around she is hungry enough to eat without a problem.

Keep verbally telling her "food stays on the tray" or maybe give her a bowl and encourage her to put it in there.

One more thing to try is giving her utensils and a few pieces of food on the tray to practice with and then spoon feed her.

Good luck, the food throwing phase is no fun!

@Thehistoryofus: Our dog has a really sensitive tummy so it's really bad! We have to race for the food, and part of the fun for our LO is to feed the dog so it encourages her to do it more :( And it's especially annoying because she LOVES grapes and grapes are bad for dogs so feeding time gets scary.

My LO is almost 13 months old. Dinner last night went like this. I made shepherds pie thinking there is a lot of options, meat, veggies, mashed potatoes. She has to like something, right? Nope, she didn't want any of it. She lets us know she doesn't like it by throwing it on the floor. Ok, no big deal, I know she loves grilled cheese so I quickly make her a grilled cheese sandwich and cut her up some grapes. All she eats are the grapes.

Breakfast this morning: I make blueberry pancakes knowing that she LOVES blueberries and eggs with cheese in them, my trick for getting her to eat eggs. Apparently she doesn't like cooked blueberries so the pancakes end up on the floor. I make her toast and give her fresh blueberries instead.

I know it will get easier when I can just ask her "What do you want for breakfast?" and she will answer.... but until then do I just have to deal with food on the floor all the time until we figure out what she wants? Saying "No!" firmly doesn't work fyi. Even though she knows what no means, it works for other things very well.
