@Rescuemom10: He's doing better, I think. He spent all of Saturday at the vet under observation. They did a blood draw and he was being a jerk so they had to sedate him. However, he's a jerk because he gets so scared while he's there and I wasn't even there to cuddle him. They ended up sending him home saturday night because he was so stressed out that he wasn't peeing at all for them and keeping him over night wouldn't get the results they desired. I brought him home and he went pee twice! yay! without crying too! I was so proud of him (even though it's not really in his control if he's blocked haha). If I would have had to bring him back to the vet sunday it would have cost me between $1,500 & $2,000 for all the catheter work and all the other stuff to clear up the blockage.

It was hard seeing him all messed up from the sedative. My hormones totally got the best of me and I bawled when he was trying to come out of his carrier. Which is so unlike me, I'm not a crier!

@.twist.: Yay glad he is doing better. Thats the food my boy has to be on and he hasnt had a prob since.
Good thing you got him in and taken care of! So hard to see them cry in pain! : (
Yeah when my boy had to go in and between getting the blockage fixed and spending a night or two there it was $900. Yeah. Not fun, but anything for the furbaby.

How is he doing now?

@blackbird: Wow thats cheaper than what I pay at the clinic. I will have to check that out!!!

@blackbird: yea they said I brought him in really early and they are having a hard time telling if he's blocked. They're keeping him for the day to monitor him and doing some bloodwork to check out his kidneys and so they can give him some anti inflammatories to see if that will help him pee easier. If he does ok today they'll send him home otherwise they're keeping him to do the catheter and stuff. Which is stupid expensive. Lol. Oh well. I always knew he liked to spend my money. Haha

It's scary but you caught it early! I was supposed to go out of town the weekend mine got sick and I always think about how he would've died if I had left him for four days :(

Hopefully the stones come out and he doesn't need to stay the night. I think I had to take mine back three times because they kept coming :(

The food has seriously helped! We have had NO issues coming up on a year now!! I also give them filtered water from the fridge

Apparently it's really common, though! He will be ok! He will just want extra cuddles for awhile I bet :)

@Sugar.Biscuit: thanks, unfortunately he's blocked up so no amount of relaxation will help :(

@blackbird: yep! I am sitting in the waiting room right now. I'd imagine if he wasn't blocked they have brought him back out by now so I'm sure he's probably going through what your cat did. My vet also put him on that food as well which is good because that's his regular brand of food anyway. :) thanks for your comment, it's help calm me a little while sitting here.

Aw poor kitty! I'm glad you took him in and caught the issue. He does sound like he's blocked up now-so I would take him in ASAP. A blockage really is an emergency. They catheterized my cat to get the stones out. He spent a couple days at the vet...once he's on new food, he should stop forming the crystals.

My vet gave me an Rx for Royal Canin urinary SO. It's $60 with free shipping through petfooddirect.com for 17 pounds (lasts my two cats about 4 months). I also give them wet food. They told me wet food doesn't cause crystals like dry food.

@.twist.: boo! We had a problem like this a few months ago. They gave us mild pain pill to give to him so he could relax enough to pee while he was healing & it worked great! I hope your kitty gets better. Its so hard to watch your fur babies in pain.

So he has a UTI, crystals aaaand he is over weight. :( my poor kitty. I am going to pick up his antibiotics right away here. He also will have to be out on a prescription diet that deals with his urine problems. He'll probably be on it forever!

@Rescuemom10: Okay thanks. I wasn't aware that they'd stopped buying the one kind of cat food, so when I went to buy more he was practically out of food so I didn't really have a choice but to put him on it right away. I did have a little bit so the first few meals were mixed but definitely not for a few days.

I just wanna hug you and your kitty. My animals mean the world to me so I understand your pain.

I had a cat that would get crystals (like someone mentioned) and he would sway back and forth when he would potty (similar to the pain we feel when we have a uti). Cats relate the pain of pottying to the litter box so often they will go outside of it. He had to be put on special food as well.

I hope the vet comes up with something. *hugs* hope your kitty feels better soon.

Usually with food changes an animal will have more upset tummy or loose stool symptoms. The fact that he is licking and drawing attention to his penis more I wouldnt think so. Could be wrong though I am not a vet.
When switching foods its easies to slowly transition and mix for a few days before giving them, the full on new brand.
The only thing I can think of is if what you had been giving him had urinary tract health benefits in it and now he is having an issue with his abilty to go, having crystals or even a UTI.
Unfortuanaly for whatever reasons they do say that male cats are more likely to have issues with crystals and blockage. I hope its not that though. Perhaps just a UTI with some Antibiotics will go away.

Ladies, could it be because I changed his food recently? I really hope not because the food I normally buy is not around any more (at least where I buy it because they started using by products and corn mainly and the shop I go to doesn't support them any more).

I second what @blackbird: said as a possibility.

My cat has them too. He had a total blockage and is now on a perscription food. The fact your boy went potty (even though it was on the couch) is a good sign. BUT it still could be that and he is just not totlally blocked but urinating becomes very painful for them. Been thinking about him and hope you get some relief and good news today at the vet.

Oh and I know about vet bills, my dog was throwing up all of his food this last weekend and we were getting nervous!! he would puke everytime he drank. So I brought him in and after the exam, multiple xrays and whatnot.....we found out.....our dog ate too fast. That's why he was throwing up. LOL I hope your solution is just as fast and easy!

@.twist. yeah they're like kidney stones. They form in the bladder and can block the urethra (and cause all the organs to shut down if it's a total blockage). My cat was licking a lot, had a little blood in his urine, and was squatting funny. The big symptom was when he would just stand still, like a dead animal and wouldn't move if you touched him. Then he'd hiss at me (which he never does): http://www.homevet.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=381:what-causes-cystitis-or-fus-or-flutd?
