@Torchwood: I don't mind at all! I also think your aunt's way of thinking on this issue isn't all that uncommon. People are all for measures like this one until it hits close to home. They are supportive of loved ones affected, but they just think, "well this situation is different." When in reality, to support your loved ones' rights you need to support everyone's rights.

I can't listen to the video at work, but a common argument (to restrict abortion) here in Wisconsin is that requiring admitting privileges by the physician performing the abortion will protect women's safety.

However there are no demands on other facilities that perform much riskier procedures. The mortality rate for a colonoscopy is more than 40 times greater than abortion, but there are no bills requiring gastroenterologist to have admitting privileges.

The logic doesn't hold. The restrictions are to make abortions harder to get, not to protect women. Like @MrsSCB: pointed out. The harder it is to get an abortion, the more dangerous it is for the woman.

I got the 40 times greater stat from this website: http://www.kaiserhealthnews.org/Stories/2014/August/08/Abortion-admitting-privileges-fight.aspx

I'm just annoyed because it was clearly a passive-aggressive response to my posting about it yesterday, and I want to make a point of actually responding "to her face," (i.e. in a direct comment on her post) so that my future posts can't be considered a passive-aggressive response.

@Torchwood: Ugh, that video. Speaking of liars...Pot, meet kettle. Anyway, I have a lot of thoughts...lol.

If they're actually worried about women's safety, and the "women who have died" obtaining abortions in other states, then the measures they're trying to take will only ensure that happens more frequently. The most certain way for a woman to seek insufficient medical care is enacting rules so stringent they force most currently legal abortion clinics to close. See Texas, where all but 8 clinics were forced to close after recent legislation (that the supreme court has now overturned). That's when women are forced to go to back-alley, black market-type places, or here in Texas they go across the border. I mean, has she even SEEN Dirty Dancing? (Ok, kidding...sort of). A recent study found that getting a legal abortion is safer than childbirth -- much safer. So safety clearly isn't an issue. (http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/23/us-abortion-idUSTRE80M2BS20120123)

Finally, if anyone thinks this is about "safety" and isn't a pro-life measure, it specifically says on the Yes on 1 website, "The wording of this Amendment was carefully drafted by the nation’s top pro-life constitutional attorneys and organizations so that it would be compatible with what we are trying to accomplish." If you're pro-life and that's why you want to vote yes, then fine. But own that. Don't try to pass this off as something to protect women, because it does the opposite.

Frankly, though, it's most likely not even worth arguing. I know it is SO hard to see stuff like this and not respond, but no one who posted this video will likely change their mind (unfortunately). Big hugs to you, though, you've already been through so much and you shouldn't have to deal with this kind of rhetoric.

@MrsSCB: Yeah, I'm pretty much just choosing to feel pleased when I see it because I know how mad they'd be if they knew it reminded me. Not like the billboards driving through Kansas. Those make me mad.

Also, can any of ya'll (@runnerd: @Boheme: @MrsSCB:) help me out with a rebuttal on this video? My aunt posted it and I want to reply, but I'm pretty much the world's worst debater. I know there's something in it about how in every state that starts to try to make abortion "safer," in reality what happens is that all the clinics start getting shut down. But there's definitely more to it, and probably a better way to explain it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct6orA98TSo&feature=share

@runnerd: Nice that there are ads for more than just one side. We were told about it by our genetics counselor, but I actually forgot until one of our neighbors put up a "yes on 1" sign. I'm sure they'd be thrilled to realize they reminded us and thus earned at least 2 more votes against it by putting up that sign. :)

I'm definitely voting no one 1, and I've been working to educate people who are voting FOR it to make sure they understand all the implications. It's so intensely invasive. The government has no place in women's reproductive health!

This one isn't as extreme as the personhood bill in CO, but there's an amendment coming up for vote in TN (where I live) that will give the government the power to ban abortion in TN, including cases of rape, incest, and danger to the mother's life. TN actually has relatively few restrictions, compared to most states in the Bible Belt, but this would put a stop to that.

If we had earlier in my pregnancy that we were going to have to terminate, we could have had it done in TN (at one point it was even offered when an ultrasound incorrectly showed more damage to her brain than she actually had at that point). We could have been spared the 1100 mile drive and associated expenses, and been near family and friends during that terrible time. But if this amendment had been passed before my pregnancy, that very likely wouldn't have been possible. This opens the door for far too many restrictions, and even paves the way for personhood amendments like the one coming up in CO, that could land a woman in prison for having a miscarriage under suspicious circumstances. I know we have some TN ladies on here, so please take the time to do your research and vote in the coming weeks.
