I watched the video on YouTube. I'm really excited I learned this! It probably would have been helpful in a couple incidences earlier on! I did see that Tula rents them. I took him for a stroll around Buy Buy Baby in their Ergo one. He seemed to be OK with being "worn." I am going to have to do a little more research on both of them.

I really appreciate all the input on this. It's definitely helping my anxiety about flying solo!

@Jls13: You can also rent the Tula for 2 weeks for $80. But it comes with a $15 off coupon if you decide to buy a new one. Sorta steep, but might be worth it if you're not sure if your baby will like it and if you're going to be traveling too long.

@Jls13: If you have a BSafe, the seatbelt install is *super* easy. The directions are on the side, but basically all you had to do is pull up the fabric on the sides near LO's feet and thread the seatbelt strap through the grooves on the car seat (so the seatbelt will be above and across your LO's legs). Then you "lock" the seatbelt according to the instructions (in the car's manual), but for *most* cars, you lock the belt by pulling it all the way out and then slowly feeding it back in so it makes that clicking noise and can't be adjusted.

I second the above post that Buy Buy Baby and/or Babies R Us is not going to have a good selection of ergonomic carriers for older babies.
I also recommend a Tula, it's similar to the ergo just more comfortable and it comes in larger sizes. You can purchase it online.

If you're flying solo I would say bring a carrier, bag check your seat and small umbrella stroller.

We have a Diono and took it to disney with us, we also had an uppababy stroller. Well DD (1 at the time) fell asleep and I had to carry her off the plane. I was glad I had DH since we gate checked both strollers and car seat.

The less you have to carry on and off the plane the better so. Also when you gate check sometimes the items are not waiting on platform so you have to wait around for them to bring it from the bottom of the plane.

Just an FYI, Buy Buy Baby is not going to have a great selection of carriers. They'll mostly be narrow based carriers which are not ergonomic and most people tend to think they're uncomfortable for both baby and the wearer. Do you have any non-chain baby stores around you? We got DH's Beco Gemini at a cloth diaper store that had a ton of carriers to try out. It was great seeing which ones were most comfortable.

@Jls13: Your pump is a medical device and counts separately. Will you really need it? I schlepped mine across the country at Christmas and never took it out of the bag.

If you don't bring the base (which I think is smart since they are so big and bulky) make sure you know how to do a seatbelt install with your car seat. I'd practice it at home so you aren't flustered in a rental car trying to you tube it.

I comfortably wear my 20 lb baby in the Beco Gemini every day, but like others said, she is really used to it since we've been doing it practically since day one-- we use it to walk the dog so it is quite literally a couple of times every day.

I don't have enough experience to offer advice on the other stuff, mostly just wanted to chime in that you should practice the install first.

This whole not using a base is amazing news! I feel like my world has been changed. I'm going to figure out how to install it sans base right now. When he wakes up from his nap we are headed to Buy Buy Baby to try on some carriers.

One more question: my electric pump- is it considered a personal item? I really want to make everything as compact as possible. I really hated juggling things through airports when I wasn't flying with a kid.

@Jls13: I agree with the Tula over Ergo advice. Also, if your DS is 20 lbs he's too big for the moby.

I agree with not bringing the base, and install it using the seatbelt. Much light and easier!

I love wearing DS through the airport because it gives me two free hands to do what I need to do.

I'm not a fan of checking bags so I carry everything with me and gate check it. I pack pretty efficiently in that I can put all of mine and DS's stuff into a Skip Hop bento bag so I don't have much to carry.

@weagle: for real? I don't need the base for the Britax infant seat? That would save me some hassle!

I used to wear with the Moby, but kind of stopped around 4 months. I liked it when he was little and at home. We are both out if practice for it. And I'm not about to wrangle him into it out in public. I'm going to look into the Tula. Thanks everyone! Such helpful advice, and I like the justification to get a carrier

(1) why do you need the base? I would just bring the bucket seat and install with a seatbelt.

(2) I really value having a carrier to get DD on and off the plane. (Because what will you do with LO while you are collapsing the stroller or gate-checking the car seat?) I wear her through security and when boarding/disembarking so I can have my hands free.

(3) I would not rent a car seat. For a variety of reasons.

If I were traveling with DD alone, this is what I would do:
Check everything except my stroller/car seat and my diaper bag. Put DD in the carrier for security and boarding (ask someone nice in line to help you fold your stroller). I would bring a bag for my car seat so it doesn't get dirty.

1) I wouldn't take the base. It's not necessary for Britax installs.
2) I used a carrier for a long time. My travel preferences would lead me to use the carrier (I prefer Tula to Ergo) and rent or buy a cheap stroller there. Though, I've travelled with our B-Agile before and it was fine. Not a terrible hassle, but I didn't have the car seat.
2) I would never rent a car seat because you don't know the seat's history.

We just now started really loving our ergo and DS is 9.5 months, 22 lbs. If I was just now buying I'd look into Tula's as well. The commentor above me makes a good point though, ds has been worn since day 1 its just now in the ergo.

Hi! My DS is almost 10 months and we are taking a vacation (flying) next week. I'm debating a couple things, so any advice would be helpful. My husband is only flying out, so when we come back I'm solo and a little nervous about handling all the baby gear.
1)DS needs his infant car seat and base, so that's coming with us. I'm thinking I will gate check them- is that the best?
2)stroller- ours connects to the infant seat (Britax). This is my dilemma: do I just use our stroller for flying and vacay or do I buy a baby carrier (Ergo is what I'm thinking) and just get an umbrella stroller when we get there? If you have an Ergo/baby carrier do/did you wear it much once baby hit 20 lbs? I really want one, but I'm not sure I can justify it at this point in the game.
3) has anyone ever done the car seat rental thing? I like the idea of it, but I definitely have my (justifiable) worries about it.

Sorry this is long. Thanks for all your help!
