If I were one of your old coworkers, I wouldn't think you're being gift grabby at all! I also say, invite them... But I really like the idea of getting that playdate together beforehand. When I throw parties, at the end of the day, I always feel like I didn't get to talk to my guests as much as I wanted to... So having a playdate beforehand might help you guys really reconnect, you know?

I don't know. I always feel awkward in these situations and end up not inviting rather than looking gift-grabby. :)

Dhs friend from hs asked us to come to her sons first birthday. They had just moved back to town and I hadn't even met her, dh hadn't seen her in years. We went because we thought it would be nice for our lo to meet kiddos and for me to meet mommy friends. And since we've had a lot more play dates!

I do agree it was weird, and hard buying a gift for someone I don't know, so a play date before the party might be nice.

I'd love to be invited to a milestone birthday from an old friend, but I would think its a bit random if we were casual pals. Even if they do not attend you will open the communication line to hopefully get the playdate.

To me it's not gift grabby. You will also be giving them a nice time and feeding them.. A first bday party is often a big deal and most people appreciate being thought of. It will be a great chance to reconnect, but agree that it might be good to reconnect over lunch or something like that beforehand.

I invited a mom friend but it was because we reconnected within the month before Cobi's birthday :)

Maybe if you reconnect a couple times in the coming months and then extend an invite?

I voted no, but not because it looks like you're gift grabby-- but it's because you aren't really close to these people (the moms or the kids). I would just do a playdate separately and not feel obligated to invite them to the birthday party.

I wouldn't want to look back at pictures a few years from now and wonder, "Why did I invite my former co-workers again?"

I don't have a ton of mom "friends" but there are people that I know who are moms. They're old coworkers of mine that we do still keep in touch. We have said so many times we should set up a play date but it's one of those things that just have not happened yet.

Should I invite them to M's first birthday party?

On the one hand I want there to be at least some kids at her party on the other hand since we have yet to get together for a play date I don't want it to seem gift grabby?

Thoughts?
