The only gym membership that was ever worth it for me was to belong to the one at my office. No excuses about commuting to the gym, because I was already there, working. Granted, I couldn't work out there on the weekends, but I did enough during the week to be able to do either outdoor activity or skip working out officially on the weekend.

I agree about my son not going near a gym daycare. Unless it was the same care giver everytime and really strucutred, he'd have no interest.

It depends on what will really keep you motivated! I had an elliptical at home & work out videos; didn't work out too well. I like joining a gym b/c I feel like I have to go since I paid for it!

I prefer to work out at home! Time is an issue for me so driving to and from the gym just adds extra time that I don't have and the work outs just don't get done. I totally get that group classes provide motivation and I definitely agree with that but for me, if I want it to get done, I have to just do it at home. 45 minutes of working out and then I can be playing with DS immediately after rather than having to drive 20 min to and from the gym adding another 40 minutes away from DS. Also, a huge factor for me was that the gyms in my area don't provide childcare during the timeframe when I'd be there!

Gym!!

I hate that I cancelled my membership since I can't go during the week. It is SO hard working at home. Sitting on the couch is much easier!

I cannot stay motivated to work out regularly at home. I have belonged to regular gyms in the past and now i do crossfit. It keeps me motivated but it is definitely really expensive. My husband goes to a regular gym (equinox) and he loves the classes and nice amenities there.

When I was a regular gym go-er, a trainer worked for me, but is pretty pricey. Then I went to group classes.

Now, I do nothing. I need to get back to the gym. :/

I went to the gym consistently before having LO but then cancelled my membership. I have not rejoined because with my schedule and DH's schedule, there is literally no reasonable time for me to go consistently more than once a week or so and the cost benefit doesn't make sense for that. So I have been doing a mix of DVDs (mostly Jillian michaels), Amazon prime streaming workouts, and some fitness burner. I work out at home at 5:45 two mornings a week and do a short workout and then get up early one weekend day song do a longer one. I am not perfect about it but I am motivated because I am sick of my clothes not fitting as well as they used to.

For you, my advice would be to think about how the gym or your other equipment would fit into your schedule and then how that would work for you. Good luck!

I cannot work out regularly at home. I can't stomach the price of personal training because I have no problem lifting weights by myself but I think they are very beneficial for many. For me, I joined a gym, got as far as I could go, am now bored with my routine, and am meeting with a trainer tomorrow to go over my exercise and diet logs. It's my ace in the hole I suppose. My gym is $30/month and I like the variety. I could never amass enough of a home gym to do everything from small weights to heavy weighted dead lifts to pull ups. I also really like the cable machines for resistance both ways

I prefer working out at the gym - I am definitely motivated by going to classes and having someone pushing me to go harder. I like having the option to work out at home when the weather is bad or I am too busy to make it to the gym during daycare hours, but I just look for videos on YouTube that I can do with a set of hand weights.

You might try a gym membership and see if they do any free introductory personal training sessions or have employees who show you how to use the equipment. I know most of our local gyms will do that for free for new members.

I currently have a gym membership because DH has one (he doesn't like to work out at home) and it wasn't that much more to add me his membership.

Personally, I have no trouble working out at home and would go back to it if DH ever drops his membership (I have an elliptical and a decent amount of weight lifting equipment at home).

But it is nice to use all the different equipment at the gym. And since I work from home, going to the gym gets me out of the house for awhile.

My son won't go to the gym daycare despite my best efforts so while I love it, it's a waste of money. I end up running several days a week on the treadmill while he plays or pushing the BOB. I only keep it for the yoga class that I try to get to weekly but end up going once a month. Ugh. I'm coming to terms with getting rid of it and getting some heavier weights at home.

I need a gym membership or signing up for a class to keep me accountable. However, having equipment at home might be easier when I only have a short amount of time. It really depends on what gets you motivated.

I really like the accountability of group exercise classes...for example I would never dream of walking out on the middle of an hour long class, but I would definitely hop off the elliptical after 20 or 30 min if I got bored! ;)

It depends on what you need a gym for that you can't do at home. Some people are really motivated and fine with doing DVDs and home workouts. I'm not one of those people. Having that membership and fee that I pay monthly motivates me to get into the gym. There are too many benefits I couldn't pass up: childcare included with membership for a max of 2 hours a day, open pool time with a toddler wading area and tons of pool toys, in the summer time there is a huge splash pad, fitness classes ranging from yoga to turbo kick to boot camp classes, discount on children's swimming lessons, and then of course all the extra equipment.

So for us - it pays for itself. It's totally worth it and we go there a lot because of all the options available.

So both my husband and I have decided that we really want to do something about getting in shape and we are trying to decide what to try...

We both want to focus on strength training and building muscle. I have done diets and tons of cardio in the past but even at my lowest weight I was never very toned.

We are trying to decide between the option of joining a gym and trying personal training sessions or purchasing some equipment to use at home. I've had mixed success with both options in the past (though I've never worked with a trainer). We currently have a treadmill and some limited weight equipment.

What has worked for you? Anyone have any tips for staying motivated with going to the gym or doing at-home workouts?
