@Dandelion: Want to hear how lazy we are? LO has been potty trained for daytime for a while, but definitely can't make it through a night without peeing. If it's in the middle of the night and he wakes up and needs to go, we'll take him since we need to put a new pull-up back on him after that. However, we also moved his little training potty into his room (since now he normally just uses the regular toilets, albeit with a special toddler seat on top), and if he wakes up around 5 or later and calls for us, we'll pick up our two-way audio monitor and tell him to take off his pull-up and put it in the trash, pee in his little potty, pick out some underwear, put them on, and get back into bed. AND HE TOTALLY DOES IT! So yeah. My kid has a chamber pot in his room.

@Lozza: I did a similar idea. Once D knew his numbers, I got him a "cool" clock and told him not to be up until the first number is 7 (except for the bathroom). Now he's old enough that if he gets up before me, he goes on the computer or plays quietly in his room.

@Chastenet: Yeah, I don't think our LO would have gotten it much before about 30 months, sadly. At 22 months we were doing exactly what you were doing and waiting it out!
Have you tried letting her go to sleep with a couple of books in her crib or next to her bed? That would sometimes buy us a little time- we'd still hear him get up but sometimes if he had books or toys in there with him it'd be enough to let him amuse himself for 20 minutes so we didn't have to jump out of bed right away at least.

@Lozza: This is what I'm planning to do once DD is a bit older, at 22m I don't think she'd quite understand yet.
For now, I just deal with the 5:30am wake ups and hope every night that she'll sleep in a little more.

A little after age 2.5 (when we knew he could understand it) we installed a "wake up light" in my son's room; basically, it's a desk lamp attached to the kind of timer you'd use to set your Christmas lights to turn on automatically at 6 PM and off at 6AM or something like that. We explained that until the wake up light comes on, it is nighttime and DS has to stay in bed. He has a pile of books next to his bed, and there are times now when he'll wake up an hour before the light comes on and we'll hear him talking and singing and reading to himself before we hear him shout "MOMMY DADDY THE WAKE UP LIGHT IS ON!" and we go get him. He went through a period of also waking up at 5:30 AM around 18 months- 2 years, and as he got older he'd sleep a little longer, but now I love having a system where he can get up and do his own thing (he always stays in his bed, though now he's 3 I'd be fine with him getting up and just staying in his room) but doesn't require our presence till a specific predetermined time (6 AM weekdays, 7 AM weekends).

i almost drove myself crazy trying to figure out how to get my LO to sleep later than his usual 4.30am wakeup time. then as i did more "research", i came along lots of parents saying the same thing, and in the end just had to deal with it. LO goes to bed at 6.30, i go to bed around 9. at 16 months, LO now wakes up around 5.30, which is still early but i'll take it any day over 4.30!

So glad to see there are others in the same boat! I think everyone is right that we just need to accept the before the sunrise wake ups and be grateful to have time in the evening (even with a 9pm bedtime for me lol) truth be told a nice big cup of coffee is all I need to feel on track, even at the crack of dawn!

Mine slept 7-5 for a very long time then 730-530. Once he was out of daycare at 14m we were able to manipulate his schedule a little better and he started going to bed at 8 and slept 8-6. He simply has never needed lots of sleep and we started putting him to bed at 7 not realizing that. But then he went to one nap at 14-15m and started sleeping 730-6 or 630 and his nap wasn't very long (1.5 hrs). At 24 months he sleeps 8-630 with a 1.5 hr nap. Sometimes it's 8-7 and sometimes he takes a longer nap.

My LO is an early riser (wakes at 5 am or so) and we have just accepted it and wake up earlier now. I have to get up at 5:30 for work anyway, so it's only 30 min early for me. My husband and I take turns waking up at 5 to feed her (she's hungry then).

We go to bed at 10-11 pm so I guess we are just used to less sleep? That's still 6-7 hours which is good in our house.

DS is almost 22 months and has always been an early riser (6am or earlier). Nothing we have done to tweak his schedule seems to make a difference so we just deal with it. And we are in bed by 9pm most nights.

Yes, there is hope, my son was up at 5 am for about a year, I thought he'd never sleep in!

Truth be told, he still doesn't sleep super late, but ever since last year when we enrolled him in day care and his days became more tiring, he began to sleep later (he's 3.5 years old now).

Ugh, my LO is on the same schedule. Go to bed at 7pm, up at 5am. I was hoping there was a light at the end of the tunnel but I don't know if I can wait until he's 4! :silly:

Three more years of having to go to bed at 9pm? @autumn865: I feel your pain.

@autumn865: We had the same problem with our son for a while... 4:30 am wakeups for a long stretch. After months of suffering/denial/bargaining, I finally solved it by just accepting i and moving my own bedtime up!

Now he's a much better sleeper (he's 4) and regularly sleeps until 7:30 or so.

DD is 21 months and has had some stints of sleeping until 6:30 or 7ish but for the most part is an early riser (5am). She goes down for bed at 7 tired and takes one nap. We've tried pushing bedtime back but all that happened was a bit more sleep (5:15-30?) and a very crabby toddler. Is there hope for us for more sleep?!
