@purrpletulips: i had the problem that the swaddle was the only thing that would calm my son/he would not go to sleep without it. he was a complete addict! what I did at first was sort of pin his arms while I fed him before bed. eventually he stopped the flailing so the swaddle was no longer needed to calm him. he does still have a bottle right before bed which relaxes him and helps him get into sleep mode....

@winniebee: yup she rolls front to back, but doesn't seem interested in back to front yet.

I swaddled one arm down last night and she fell asleep in seconds, but I ended up tucking her other arm in because the sleep sack was pulling on her pjs and it wasn't covering her arm..so I was afraid shed get cold haha! I'm gonna try one arm again tonight :)

Trying to decide what to do with DS about this now. He loves his hands and will work one out of the top to suck on however he won't fall asleep unswaddled. He spends a lot of time when we first put him down/when he first wakes up trying to free his hands. He is 3 1/2months.

I think she's rolling, right? If so, then she's ready to be weaned. My son started rolling at 4 months and we swaddle weaned then (quit cold turkey). We had a rough few nights but then it was fine.

Are you swaddling for naps or just overnight? When we stopped swaddling, I started at naps. The first few days were tough, but DS got used to it and we are all happier. He's learned to fall back to sleep if he startles himself. My favorite thing is how precious he looks when he sleeps with his arms stretched wide open.

I'm on my iPod so can't post a link but you could try a Love to Dream swaddle as an in between step. My LO uses one as she loves to have access to her hands but she still loves the security of being wrapped.

I would keep swaddling until she starts rolling. LO loved playing with her hands, but the swaddle helped her sleep better. So that's what we did. The Miracle Blanket is truly a miracle.

@mrsmate: haha, after you said that I figured I'd try it (to maybe help her transition to not swaddling?) and she stopped flinging her arms around and is starting to fall asleep!

when I swaddled with a blanket she ALWAYS broke out. She actually got the blanket up over her face one morning and scared the hell out of me. So I bought 2 halo swaddle sack things and she can wiggle her hands out the top, and also has managed to make a toga before? she would love having her hands back I think..but wakes herself up still flailing. maybe ill try the one arm tonight and see how she does!

I would swadde wean sometime between 3 and 4 months. I feel like you will know when it is time as LO will probably start busting out of the swaddle or spending way too much energy trying. When we swaddle weaned, the worst was over in about 3 days or so.

Have you tried swaddling with only one arm in? I know some moms who did that as their babies got older. But they all did it to prolong swaddling. I don't think you have to worry about swaddle weaning. Sooner or later your LO will get too big/strong to swaddle and she'll let you know!

so when LO was born, she loved her hands. I didn't swaddle her because she became so upset, and the second her hands were free again she was calm. She was waking often, though, so one night I threw in the towel and forced her into a swaddle and she sleeps great! At 11 weeks, she's averaging a 7-8 hour stretch (with the exception of a few rough nights from a sick belly).

However, she just (re?) discovered her hands for play and will rub her eyes when she is tired, and in the swing or bouncer she'll rub her face to fall asleep.

Should I stop swaddling now, and deal with the lack of sleep and let her learn to stop waking herself up with her arms? Or stick with a good thing and still swaddle, but have to deal with weaning her later?

I don't know if it'll be worse to wean later or not!
