Thanks @NovBaby1112: for your reply. I sure hope it's just a phase. He does go to bed super early right now and we have to wake him in the morning, so I know he needs the sleep.

@rachiecakes: I do think the fresh air helps a lot! It seems to be the only way to ensure he naps. I guess I have to figure out a way to get outside even when it is super cold out. It takes a long time to get bundled up and I can't take my baby outside, but maybe even 20 - 30 minutes of fresh air while the baby is sleeping will be the answer. Come on springtime!!!

@Suzanne44: my son started to drop naps shortly after his first birthday! he's super-active and has always been, even as a newborn/infant.
What works the best for us is making sure he gets lots of physical activity before a nap. The best is getting time outdoors in the fresh air to run around, on those days he actually naps really well.
If J is inside and not really exerting energy, he just won't nap at all. Or if he's in school, he's too excited to be with the other kids to nap.

I'm so sorry! No advice about the poop but my LO who is 25 months just went through a week long nap strike, for no reason that I can pinpoint. She just literally stopped mapping for a week. Even a car ride which usually knocks her out didn't work. After a few days I just gave up trying bc she wasn't acting tired and wasn't fussy. She just went to bed SUPER early those days, like 6/6:30 and would sleep until 7. This went on for about a week and then she just all of a sudden started napping again :) good luck!! I feel like sometimes just trying not to force the nap works best, and also just do a quiet time if he doesn't nap.

@Mrs Green Grass: Thanks for your reply. He didn't nap again today. I tried a little longer pre nap routine but don't have a lot of extra time since I also have a baby. I put on music and he actually was lying still for a good 10 minutes but then all the same shenanigans started. At least the footless backwards sleeper kept his hands out of his diaper. I am sorry you are going through your own struggles with your 23 month old. I hope the counting works for you. My guy can count to 20 but it's a game for him. Half the time that is what he is shouting from his bedroom. I don't know how to teach him to do it quietly. My hubby is going to take him outside for a long time tomorrow morning so he should have a nap tomorrow afternoon.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this! We are going through some difficult phases with my 23 mo.

My suggestions: you mention counting works for you. I've actually been doing this with my LO! We count to 10 or 20 before getting out of the chair to get in bed and then again while I'm holding him next to his bed. It's really helping. I'm hoping he'll internalize it and count on his own at some point.

Other than that, could you do a longer pre-nap routine? Maybe even take a bath and make it more like bedtime?

I hope something works!

I am stuck in a nightmare, or I guess I should say daymare if there is such a thing! What started out as my toddler deciding not to nap once every couple of weeks, changed to napping every other day, and now he is going days in a row without napping. I know he needs the nap. He is exhausted and seems very tired until I leave the room. Then the somersaults and jumping in the crib begins. Followed by shouting songs, the alphabet and counting out loud. We do a short pre nap routine consisting of a couple books and a song. I limit any type of crazy activity after lunch and the tv is off. We try doing quieter activities until nap time. He seems wound down but goes absolutely nuts after a few minutes of lying down. It's like he can't shut off his brain. If he would lie still for long enough I know he would fall asleep. I tried just doing quiet time with quiet books but he is anything but quiet and resting. I thought it was just happening on the days that he wasn't burning off a lot of energy in the morning, but it happens on days where he should be/is physically tired. I bought one of those twilight turtles hoping the soothing sounds and the water projection on the ceiling would help him sleep but he is terrified of it. The only thing I can thing of that could be keeping him awake is him not being able to shut his brain off for sleep. I am the same way. I have to count backwards in order to allow my brain to stop thinking about everything. So how do I help him do this? Any suggestions? The terror doesn't end there... He also keeps sticking his hands in his diaper. Some days he poops and plays with it. I swear he is deciding to poop at this time so he can stall naptime. He goes before he goes to bed most of the time and if he hasn't I watch the monitor so I can try to catch him before he plays in it. Thankfully it has just been a hand stuck in it and no poop art...yet. The last couple of days he has stripped down and peed on the bed as well. He is not potty trained. I am going to try footless onesies put on backwards to get the stripping/diaper removal under control. Sorry for the long post!
