@locavore_mama: that's how I do it too, because my rice cooker sucks! But then Mr. Jacks accidentally killed ours last week when he dumped a cup of rice water in without the bowl.

Since he has a new job (and I can actually spend money again!) I want a zojirushi that has a congee setting.

I'm really excited to not be on extreme money lock-down! That was no fun at all!

@Mrs. Jacks: I actually never use my rice cooker for congee. I always simmer in a pot. My mom always made it like that so it never occurred to me to use my rice cooker!

Last year when I had the flu I pretty much lived on that chicken rice soup mrs. Bee posted about. Oh man that was good. My mom still tells her kids (ages 21-26) to follow the brat diet when we're sick :)

thanks Everyone I'm going to make a sweet rice congee with steamed eggs and spinach for her. Something a little bland but with nutrition

I feel like lots of fluids, and a GF diet would be really nice for the digestive tract for a few days. Then, making sure baby is getting nutritious meals, but more on the bland side.

@CottonCandy: I think some new school docs are even recommending it, if that makes you feel better. They say it takes an average of 10-11 years for medical learning to be disseminated. So I'm not surprised at all.

Having said that, I think people will be recommending it for a long time to come, because it's one of those things that you can provide to parents that makes people feel like they are doing something productive and that the likelihood of harm is low.

@ Mrs. Jacks: I'm surprised its not recommended anymore.. But again, I am no expert lol. My lo's docs do recommend the BRAT but they may be considered old school to some!

@CottonCandy: Ooh, that was just an excerpt on a review of the BRAT diet. I wasn't implying anything. The learning isn't fully disseminated but pediatricians who follow the literature usually don't recommend BRAT anymore. I was just distilling the recommendations to be helpful.

It's not about starving the child, it's about the brush border of the intestine being damaged and not any intentional starvation.

I'm sorry if the quote and link were offensive.

@ Mrs. Jacks: Well geez I don't think anyone here is implying to starve the kid on just crackers and water...Just suggesting bland foods to not upset the stomach for a few hours. But you are the doctor so you would know better!

"The selection of a single type of restrictive diet (e.g.,
the BRAT diet) during diarrhea can impair nutritional
recovery and in fact lead to severe malnutrition.
Dietary management during any acute illness should
be balanced, providing all of the three major macronutrients,
as well as meeting the DRI for micronutrients.
Prompt feeding during an acute episode of diarrhea
and avoiding unnecessarily restrictive diets is the recommended dietary therapy during acute diarrhea."

LO who's almost 16 months has diarrhea accompanied with a fever. I'm thinking I should feed her a BRAT diet.

How closely do you follow the banana, rice, applesauce and toast recommendation?

Of course I don't have banana or apple/sauce or toast at home!
