It sounds like a great incentive to just potty train- we did at that same age and it sounds like she's ready. For me it was a bite the bullet couple of weeks where diaper laundry was replaced with more regular laundry but it's worth it IMO!

Oy, this is such a complex issue. We are a Montessori household, in the extreme. I absolutely want to respect her wishes, and plan to do so. She is really verbal, so she was able to tell me that she wanted disposables, because she had a rash, and because they felt better than cloth. So, obviously, I'm going to do that.

The REAL issue is potty training. She is 23 months old, and is actually about half way there. We do days (whenever she feels like it, basically) where she just runs around naked, and usually (not always) holds it in. Then she asks to use the potty, and we do, whenever she wants - but she cannot yet release and actually use the potty reliably. I figured that was just a development thing, and I'm just following her lead.

I've seen friends who had a lot of success with an all or nothing approach at this age. I've also seen a family member fail to potty train her daughter with that method and just create a lot of stress and hassle for everyone involved, so I'm really gun shy about just going for it. But, that does seem to be what she wants to do. I'm just at kind of a loss about the entire issue, honestly.

Can you offer a 3rd option - really pretty big girl underwear? Maybe some training pants?

@Mrs. Jacks: Interesting!
I probably would switch because I don't know any better--or do more naked time and bath/swim in the baby pool time... and I guess consider potty training? We aren't there yet so take this with a huge grain of salt.

I think she's showing toilet readiness. Montessori folks might say don't switch. Paper makes them more comfortable while wet and that's the opposite of what you want. You want her cueing in to the wet feeling. Hopefully I'll finish my blog post on this topic this weekend!

We also had rash issues so I sadly made the switch. Lo didn't ask for it, but I just felt that it would be better for her. She has very sensitive skin and the rash kept coming back. But yes if she asked for it I would definitely do it.

Yup. He is daytime potty trained but found the pull-ups with lightning irresistible. He gets one and if he pees in it, he has to wear underwear. He asks for diapers and sometimes it is a fight.

I didn't go through the exact same thing but maybe you could reason with her and see if she will agree with you. Especially with the diaper rash. When my kid was this age, she was fine tuning her ability to negotiate and express her opinion. So I wouldn't give in right away. I think disposables can hinder potty training a bit.

Honestly, in this case I would listen to her preference. I love my cloth as much as the next CDing Momma, but I would assume there is a reason she is asking (they are more comfortable, etc) and I wouldn't put my desire above hers when it comes to this. Keep the cloth around and continue to offer it and hope that she changes her mind though.

My (23 month old) daughter has been in cloth diapers since birth. We use disposables at night, and if we're out for a long day, but about 75% cloth. Lately she's had a bit more diaper rash, and I've been putting her in disposables, which helps to clear it up faster.

Today she flat out asked for a disposable! I can't really stand the thought of just switching to them for the months we have left before she's fully potty trained (she's slowly working on it), but I don't feel right putting her in cloth when she's specifically asking me not to.

Anyone else dealt with this???
